Oil change!!!

This topic has been beat to shit. It's like coke and pepsi. One thing I do wonder is this.... Before I did my motor, I had 145k miles. Oil was ALWAYS black. I'd do a change, fill it up, flush out approx 1-1 1/2 gallons of fresh oil to clean it further, and it would still be black. Anyone ever seen this?

That is completley normal as I noticed that too. Best not ponder about it;)

I would avoid royal purple it seems to sludge up diesels
I'm glad you mentioned this, I've also heard of the sludge build up in diesels with Royal Purple. I read a thread and dont remember which site it was on. An engine was torn down for a build and it looked like hell inside. The owner claimed he used Royal Purple oil.

I use wix filters, buy them through my amsoil farm account. Comes out cheap!

I've been running rotella for quite a while now. Used to run ameliorate but i feel more comfortable just changing my oil/filter at 5000 and being fresh.

Everyone has told me that diesel oil is and always stay black but I did a test over 30k miles on my lbz to get the oil cleaner. I changed it every 2000 miles to clean it up and it worked. Im doing the same on my lb7 I can go almost 3000 miles and my oil is still clear. I use canadian oil and mobil1 filter. With as little oil that our trucks have and as hot as the oil gets im not about to run it longer than it needs to.

I know when you drain the oil the oil in these trucks it does not completely drain there is like a half'ish quart left. Basically I was told its just soot. The more hopped up your truck is the more soot ,I'd imagine and the quicker your oil turns black.

I myself think its more than that. I don't have any real answer but I know my oil after a fresh change turns black immediately. I know when my friend changes oil in his Cummins it stays clean for quite some time. So it isn't all diesels.

Maybe it has something to do with the oil flow? Piston Cooling? Inadequate crankcase ventilation? Beats me but excessive soot has to be it. I also believe that all generation models are the same.

I'm not gonna do the flush as mentioned above as I don't believe it bothers anything long as you run a good oil filter. I wonder how individuals that have dual oil filtration if it's cleaner. Dirty oil means its doing its job.

Cousin has a bypass filter setup on his lmm, says it is coal black too. He and i both have egr's on the trucks but blocked, oil just gets nasty black instantly in mine.

My bro's 6.7 cummins is worse. It has pitch black and stinks like tar. I'm sure his is EGR related as it is all stock right now other than a MP8

Well mines a LB7 as you know with no emission junk and is black black black basically right after a change. The Cummins I refer to is 99 24v. Not the newer ones which are emissioned up.

I'd like to hear others view on why can't say emissions. Must be a common rail thing,the higher fuel pressure a common denominator?? Has to be a reason besides left over oil which I know contributes

I have seen the results of royal purple! a good friend of mine had all his exaust valves stick in the guides do to coking. he since switched to cenpeco problem solved.

i run schaeffers supreme 7000 racing 20w50 in my engine. 3 years of abuse and still as tight as the day i built it. my dad runs the supreme 7000 15w40 with great results as well!

So why can't we run a regular 20w-50 oil? Does it have to be diesel engine oil? I know they have additives for wear and soot control but I have never found a 20w-50 oil designated for diesels.

We run rotella in everything. Including our gas race motors. We used to run racing fluid til our motor man let us know every motor that leaves his shop has 15/40 in it.

When I change my oil & filter, it will stay clear for 500 miles, then turn black from 500 to 1000. This is both with EGR and now with it blocked.

I notice you can get a bit more oil out of these engines if you let them drain long enough. An oil change takes the better part of 40 minutes for me. Start it draining, come back in 15, pull the filter, come back in 20, new filter, drain plug back in, fill it up.

My Dad has a '99 Cummins, and that oil is black by the time it hits the pan. You don't even have to start the engine. Just fill it up and check the stick: yep, black! My old '82 6.2L is the same way.

I suspect it has a lot to do with the oil you use, and how much soot makes it into the oil. Perhaps some soot builds up between changes as well.

My 04 with the dual filters and the centrifuge turns the oil black before it gets warm the first time.

My 06 takes about 4,000 miles for the oil to start changing.

I use schaeffers 7000 15-40, was using amsoil 15-40 for a long time, but now i'm 3 oil changes into the schaeffers...........I have noticed my crankcase vent doesnt seem to smoke as much with the schaeffers.

I know your NOT supposed to run conventional 20-50 in a diesel and use diesel compliant oil ONLY. Also for instance in my Harley you aren't suppose to run conventional 20-50 oil but you can use diesel compliant 20-50.

There has to be different additive packages in diesel oil like soot control and I'm pretty sure there is a higher zinc and phosphorus (anti-wear) additives. So I would NOT run regular oil in my truck.

So I still want to know why our oil gets black so darn quick.
