BUT, it all comes down to interpretation.... By your interpretation you are right, but that doesn't mean you get your $500interpretation back
That's why most clubs have a tech official or committee. You feel a competitor's truck is illegal regarding rule "X" (something that can be visual/tangible). You ask an official about rule "X", have them give you the club's interpretation of the rule (you can even ask about a "hypothetical" situation/truck beforehand). Even get it in writing if need be. With the KNOWLEDGE you gained by going through the PROPER channels (not just being impulsive), you are no longer taking a gamble with your money.
Sadly most pullers will NEVER go this route, they would just rather bitch/complain about said truck. It makes for great drama though ("As the pulling tire turns").
The other issue is when one puller "thinks" his competitor's truck is illegal because it hands him an A$$ whooping. The competitor may be cheating, or maybe he is that good. A competitor with a non-legal stroker motor is hard to catch, but an illegally designed hitch, illegal frame, lacking safety equipment, etc. is pretty straight forward once you have the "official interpretation". While not right, I understand when they get no backing...
This system falls apart when you have a single tech, an idiot tech, or a tech who plays "favorites". Most "reputable" org/clubs that should not be an issue. My personal feeling is that no single tech should be able to make a ruling as it tends to be based on what the tech thinks vs the intent of the rule to begin with.
I've had communications with Tech inspectors from several national orgs about rules. 20 different pullers may interpret a single rule 20 different ways, but if any of those ways does not meet the intent of the club, then it is not legal (and a puller can argue until he/she is blue in the face about what they think they read or what they believe the intent is, but it won't make it legal). That said national orgs make exceptions and mistakes as well.
If the techs have no balls and the pullers do, then things go to crap quick.....at that point rulebooks might as well be used for toilet paper. I've even seen techs let stuff go because they are usually volunteers and sick of dealing with BS and whining and say F it.....run it (they don't need the aggravation/headache).
