Hey all. I may be moving to NY state from CT and I'm wondering what the emissions testing is like. If I do a DPF back exhaust, and an EGR delete with tune, would I pass emissions..? Anyone have experience with NY state emissions?
Thanks.

My research on this subject turns up a Yearly Inspection and Emission in NY???? Thats BS! And they plug into the OBDII to find out what's up!! F NY!
In CT it's only emissions is every 2 years.

Unless something has changed in the last few months there is NO emission inspections for diesel pick-ups in NY, at least up state anyhow...

I'm in suf**** county on Long Island and i get the sniffer. I don't have a kitty and i pass w/ flyin colors. It's one of those things where you gotta "have a guy". My friend from high school works at the shop. I dont know why you'd wanna move to this social cesspool....

Sorry for late response guys. Was away all weekend. So i guess its all depending on what area you live in NY. I may have to move to the Putnam or Westchester County areas. I refuse to live near people so i want to get as far North as the woman can handle commuting to her job. Haha.

I live in Arizona, Maricopa county is one of two counties required by the state to have emissions and I have to take mine in every year. It's a really strange test where they do not plug into the OBDII port for diesels but do on the gas vehicles. If they did plug onto the OBDII connection I think mine would fail with the EGR disabled with EFI. I did however pass the visual under hood and the cat visual, the cat is a Donaldson resonator looks kinda like a cat.

The testing consist of: catalytic visual, under hood visual, CEL visual, throttle test to see if the governor is operational, and a final what they call a snap test, particulate/opacity at WOT with a tube on the exhaust pipe. Goes like this, idle-floor it to the governor let off, repeat 3 times. With all the emissions when I purchased the truck the opacity was 4.6 this year was a 6.6 with a maximum of 40.0. My 82 elephant has passes 80% below all maximum allowables for the last twenty years and all the emissions is intact just plugged..........:woott:

The State of Arizona does have rules regarding people who live just outside Maricopa and commute and work daily into Maricopa then you are required to test...........

I don't believe if OBD test that it gets to deep other then to look for a CEL present and history of MIL request. That is what I believe anyway

As far as a visual YES if they do look you must have it . Most people have a friend at a inspection station although ;)

In CT I'm registered at the exact weight of the truck. I would think they wouldn't just let you make it up... but if they did, what would be the weight (wink, wink) I should register it at?

An LMM shouldn't need to be plugged in and doesn't need more than a Safety sticker. I have heard the light vehicle computer will randomly ask for a diesel to be plugged in just to verify that the vehicle is present, but it doesn't actually check anything. I have mine inspected at work and we don't have a computer system as we only do Safety and Heavy vehicle inspections, so no plug in.

Heres a basic guideline that might help. Probably going to have to figure out which counties are considered the Metro Area.

As for the weight, they won't let you register it for any less than the title weight, they will probably recommend you register it for more. Technically, if you register it for title weight, your are overweight with just you in the cab, let alone anything in the bed.

I believe anything over 10K is exempt. My dually was at 11,300 GVW.

YES 1pieceatatime!! I saw that, hence why I got concerned prompting the question. I really don't know what to believe now. But I want to do an exhaust and - EGR to get better gas mileage and power but don't want to be screwed if I move to NY.

I don't know. I just remembered reading up on that a while back, thats what made me dig for the info. I dunno if they do a smoke snap test, a sniffer test or what. Sounds like despite the way the regulations appear to be worded for NYMA, its not strictly enforced.

I do know for any shop that doesn't have the states computer for Safety and Emissions and are only doing heavy vehicle and safety, they could easily put the wrong stickers on stuff and it wouldn't get caught until the DMV did an audit of the paperwork.
