nozzle VS injectors.. get it right!!!!!!

An injector is what puts the fuel into the motor at a specific time. I don't care how it works compaired to other injectors. Its not going to make me call it anything else. especially not nozzles when we already have nozzles on our injectors.

ok..

take take the "injectors" and only that out of the dmax.. operate the soleniod in a tub of diesel fuel... will fuel be injected out the tip?

an actual injector will.

It's actually opened by the fuel pressure itself. That's why it must have a return circuit, so it can go back to position.

Ok, thanks for the info, but wouldnt the fuel pressure just hold the injector open constantly? So before the injector closes a return circuit opens so the solenoid can return to closed position, but then once fuel pressure builds in the rail again how does the solenoid hold back the pressure?

the ISX injectors are EUI and it is mechanically actuated.. they function the same way the EUIs do on the 60s Detroits and Cat ACCERT engines

there are two basic types of diesel fuels delievery systems "Unit Injector"(self contained) and Pump-Line-Nozzle(not self contained)

ISX and Detroit Series 60 injectors do not operate the same way. Metering and timing on an isx are controlled by the two timing and two metering solenoids on the drivers side of the engine. The middle one is fuel shutoff. The cam is used only to create pressure. So the isx "injector" is not self contained and cummins still calls them injectors. Detroit Series 60 injector have the solenoid in the injector and is self contained. I'm a mechanic for a trucking company with around 1800 trucks and like 98% of them have cummins isx and Detroits.

the ISX graghted some HPCR style fueling to get fuel to the injector.. this fuel pressure is supply pressuse.. less then 300psi IIRC. there is more things going on in that fueld system then cats HUEI system.

the ISX engine brake is completely different in how cylinders are actuated as well.. can have between 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 cylindrs ativated... every one else is 2, 4, or 6 cylinders

OK, going off memory (I could be wrong):

The needle just sits in the nozzle, and is held shut by spring pressure. The solenoid allows fuel to travel down a side port and forces the needle to open and fuel sprays in. When the solenoid closes, the spring forces the needle down and fuel pressure in side port goes out through the return.

The fact still remains that the isx injector doesn't have a solenoid on the injector and by your definition it would then not be considered an injector. But cummins and everyone else I have ever talked to calls it an injector.

so.. by the deffinition i gave.. weres the ISX injector fall under inrelation to basic fuel system design/operation?

I always thought a nozzle was the "thingy" that goes on the end of my injector.:spit:
