Poor fuel economy after replacing the return fuel line and 4 injectors. First time in the shop for a wrench to the motor at 149,000. The shop that did the work for me also put a valve cover gasket on and pinched it ( leak) according to the dealership ( today). Going to have the gasket replaced monday but my question is still about the change in mileage. I have owned this 02 Durmax 13 yrs since it had 2000 miles on it and I have consistently had 17 mpg empty but since the fuel rail issue I am getting 12 - 14 mpg. Truck runs great, what am I missing? Could it still be an injector problem still? The work was done at 149,00 miles and I am now at 153,000. I do very little of my own wrenching so I like to be well informed when facing a mechanic or worse yet a service writer.
One other concern ( I am not satisfied with the dealership explanation) when in 4 wh dr and I go from drive into park it makes a ratcheting sound going past R. Any suggestions?

The ratcheting noise is the out put shaft is still turning in the trans. It must be completely stopped for the parking pawl to lock. Sounds like you have a clutch pack not holding.

Thank you Mike L. I always have it at a dead stop when shifting however I had a husband that used to drive it and he would not come o a complete stop before shifting... Will this continue to get worse if ignored?
Anyone specializing in Duramax in Southern Oregon? I would be up for a short road trip to seek specialists!!

So i was turning around today and decided to try the 4 wh drive so I backed up, stopped put in 4 lo and tried to go forward... Nothing happened it would not move... Tried rev.. Same thing would not move. So I put it in Neutral and went back into 2 wh drive it still would not move. I turned off the truck, restarted and tried all of the above scenarios again still no movement but the speedometer would register 3 - 5 mph. Had the neighbor give me a shove back into the driveway with his Dodge ( ouch)! Then I tried the gears again everything worked but I didnt try the 4 wh drive. Could this be a transfer case problem and not the transmission?
Once again i am looking for qualified shops near my area for the Duramax motor and the Allison tranny, any recomendations for southern Oregon or very Northern CA?

If the transfer case fails bad enough, It would seem like a transmission failure. I had a shift fork blow a hole in the side and leak out all my fluid, and it drove home fine. Backed out of the driveway, then lost all gears. Putting it in park made the ratcheting sound as everything was spinning inside the case, Also had a shift range inhibited. Figured it out when it actually slammed into 4lo and moved.
