What do you think their reasoning behind keeping their trans for lower hp levels is? Ford has a trans that can handle biig tunes(well some anyway).

These trucks are engineered to live a long healthy life at stock power, not the power that they are capable of with a big nasty tune......:D

I used to hear the same thing on the Camaro boards about the 10 bolt rearend that was just too weak. But the 10 bolt is perfect for the way the car was engineered.

LOL if only the truck came from the factory with the full potential.

Dang EPA. I we need to get someone in office that isn't in favor of the EPA. I hate the Oil guys, and I hate the Green guys. Isn't there someone out there with common sense?

common sense says "collect money from lobbyists" And whom ever else is handing out the Ben Franklins..Does anyone really think laws are made up to protect the environment....? You hand me a couple mil to say vehicles need catalytic converters and Ill write a law that says we do need them, save the planet what???. :D

Back on topic, Mike, do you have anything in mind that you will do different or product ideas in the works due to the new design only? Or is this trans pretty much needing the exact same treatment as the previous years we love to beat on?

It pretty much will need more clutches. The converter is done. The valve body is being modded. The new Borg Warner clutches show some real promise and it looks like it will be possible to do a cheaper upgrade in certain cases IF I get the truck before it's abused. If it's after, then the cost will be about the same.
The biggest difference in this trans is the operating system. Instead of have a static 245 psi all the time; this system will regulate pressure by throttle angle. That means at idle it will be running minimum pressure and as the throttle is depressed the pressure rises as needed. I believe the adaptive learn ( TAPs ) will play a smaller part which is a good thing.
The converter has a captive two sided clutch which is worthless but they made the sprag on the stator bigger which is good. All the converters will interchange.
C3/C4 clutch packs are different with new clutches and new style pistons and return springs which are much better. They will interchange to earlier units if used completely and vice versa although I like the new style better for a number of reasons. They have much stronger return springs which will help eliminate tie ups to a certain extent on the 3/4 shift. The output shaft is HUGE, input is the same. There will not be a need for the Transgo cut back valve as this unit has no cutback and doesn't need it because of the way pressure is regulated. The valve body has it's own version of a shift kit with the check balls made into the body casting. Trim valves are bigger for more pressure.
There is no existing pump or valve body mod made by anyone at this time that will fit this new trans.

Can't wait for all the threads on " Can I fit a 2011 Allison in my 03 (o4,05, ect) ? "

While I imagine it'll bolt up to the older engines, you'd have to figure out what to do about the transfer case since the output shaft is different. Further, you'd need the new TCM to control it, and based on my experimentation with the 6 speed TCM & 04 LLY ECM, I'd say there's NO WAY you're going to get it to work. 06/07 LBZ would be a MAYBE, but still doubtful due to the move away from Class2 starting with the LMM. I could see it possibly working with the LMM's, but I suspect you'd still have to deal with the output shaft difference, IF the TCM would interact properly with the rest of the truck.

Mike, do you know if it's an A50 TCM, or yet ANOTHER model?

Thanks for the writeup. Since the new C3/C4 clutches, pistons & return springs that are improved and can be swapped into older transmissions, would it add a significant cost to upgrade to these during a refresh?

Parts are not available yet. There is no parts books yet. GM and Allison dealers have no idea what I am talking about. I gave them part numbers and they do not exist. Yet.

I am told I have the A50 TCM in my 2010 as I cannot program mine, well I think that beta is out now for efi live to program it.

I guess its the same controller with different flash information on it?

I did try to read my TCM with efi live before the update and I could not, I have not tried since but when I contacted EFI live they did confirm my findings.
