Been thinking about it for a while now.
With current setup.. I turn in 5th
1900@70 3.73:1/32" tire
2100@70 3.73:1/30" (OEM)
2100@70 4.10:1/32"
2300@70 4.56:1/32
My 99 3500 HD had 4.63 and ran 2500rpm @70

Figured reduce engine load my EOT would drop as well

Engine falls on its face below 1800rpm especially noticeable with heavy loads..shows up better with the. Bigger charger as well.. Naturally
Theres also a 4.30 set available for the 11.5" axle that I would think would put you in a sweet spot. With 4.30's and OEM height tires, you would be turning about 2200 in 6th which I would think for a dedicated hauler would be just about ideal. Shoudl defiantely help with the heat loading by reducing load as well as increasing RPM's and airflow when the fan kicks in.

Can't get 4.3 for the front afaik 4x4, 4.1/4.56 are the two options..
I can't get any smaller than 225/70/19.5(32") swapped for increased tire life at reduced cost..
The line of thought.. Setup to run 75-90% 5th and leave 6th for light loads

Didn't realize yours was a 4X4. With a 32" tall tire, then a 4.56 would put you in the same ballpark. According to the gear ratio calculator, 4.56 and a 32" tall tire would put you at 2380 in 5th at 70, or 2078 in 6th. That would put you in a pretty decent gearing for a heavily loaded rig I would think. Or 4.88's would put you at 2547 and 2224 at 70, but that would take away using 6th for light loads. I would think your setup you would like running at 2500 at 70 when loaded down.

From what I've seen, oil temp goes up with rpm.

And for all the Cummins lovers, I've rebuilt or replaced more Cummins engines than Powerstroke or Duramax combined. They were all stock trucks too. Bottom line, they all have failures. What it all comes down to is what you prefer to drive and work on.

I would think with the reduced engine loading it would help to reduce the heat loading of the cooling system, so it should help to keep temps in check. Was oil heating a problem in 4500/5500 trucks? I know they used 4.56 and up gears in them with a simliar height tire to what he says he's running.

All I know is if I downshift to try to keep EGTs in check, I see my oil temps start to creep up. I know I've seen others report the same thing.

Haven't really seen oil temp raise due to rpm...
EGT s max at 1100° regardless rpm I was avg 50-75° hotter egt temps from my 750-800 normal for this type of load. Med heavy/med-high wind drag

Dropping gears would transfer load from engine/Trans to differential... It has a a mag hagtec with 75/140 synthetic shortly after I bumped to 36k

Iirc Kodiak has a 15qt? capacity.. I run 12qt in mine any more it starts foaming from completely dry system it takes 26qt to fill up +2qts included.

Sean same thing as when you add a deep pan to a transmission.. Takes longer to get and got and softens the heat spike.. The extra 2qts slows the heat spike on grades... Seen that myself

My brother in law has an 05 cummins one ton dually. He busted a piston with under 200,000,and lost some injectors. Truck was pretty much stock but hauled some goosenecks and a fit wheel camper. On a side note, anyone know how many broken cranks are in kodiaks?

Mine will do it every time. But swapping to the 4.56s helped that issue as I could pull 5th for much longer or not even down shift. When it's below 105* out here, I don't even have to come out of 5th up our biggest hills fully loaded. At or above that temp, things get warm/hot unless I back the speed down and drop to 4th

Stopped for lunch..
Got to swap fuel lines/injectors since they where loose and open..Exhaust, turbo, upper oil pan (hit with fork lift) found OEM balance flexplate.. And wiring harness.

Waiting on glowplugs, injectors seals, flex plate bolts andnflex plate swap oil pan.. Coolant y bridge/oil cooler corner for heater core.. Then harness and install

Can the LMM be ran with out both ECT sensors? LBZ has one and heater core supply is up by tstats.. Vs oil cooler the LMM is at. Don't really want to mess with those if I don't have too
