I've personally known 3 that have gone. 2 make nearly 6-fig salaries managing or owning shops now while the other might as well had dropped a bag of hundreds on the ground & lit em on fire cause he's trimming trees make a little better than min wage!

I trim trees for minimum wage. So what is wrong with that?

My cousin went to Phoenix did the cycle, 4 wheeler, begin part of the UTEs when they were coming on the scene. Spent cash from his inheritance now back to Colorado west side got the job right away and just ends up changing tires and some mechanical but mostly not what he wanted to be. He quit and went to glass shop and learned the glazier trade for almost all common stuff needed and is still doing it because it is more of what he should have just done I guess. Waste of money though except he fixes all the family machines for free now because they have a nice guy who does that for the ones who waste them from hard riding and have a free mechanic. Knows electric and all the latest tech features on these machines but why not just start your own shop if you learn so much and just want to select you work. I don't get it guess you have to be happy regardless. Nascar team would be so cool to be in if you didn't have to save your marriage too while working on cars all over and never home. Wives don't like daddy gone and she stays home with all the kids etc. As is where is how this rolls I guess

I'm sure the guys that are managing or especially owning a shop would have probably been in the same position without the school. Actually without waiting those 2 years to get started their shop may have been even bigger. Work ethic, drive, common sense, and experience all go further than a "certificate" in this industry.

I went to NADC,, if it wasn't on scholarship I woulda been pissed. I was 19 and had worked in the industry since i was 15. The requirements to be an instructor there and at most tech schools was 5 years experience. Now i by no means am tooting my own horn but damn!!! i really think most started the day after they had their 5 years in and it was probably because they were getting fired from their old jobs for being idiots. They new what was in the book we had in front of us and nothing more. had a question outside of that and you were way outta their league. I showed one how to time a 6B cummins after he told us hes done it that way for years,,, well guess he's ****ed up lots of 12Vs setting the timing wrong then lol. BUT there are the exceptions. We had a few that REALLY i mean REALLY knew their shit and were great but that was maybe 3-4 out of like 15 instructors we had. Bottom line is if you can get a place to give you a chance you'll learn more on the job in 6 months then in a tech school in a year or 2.

I definitely understand where everyone is coming from. My thing is the school I'm looking at isn't just a mechanical school. UNOH's high performance motorsports program teaches you things you arent just going to pick up like wrenching on a motor. The syllabus includes engine machining, engine building, fab and body work...pretty much a decent deal of things your average joe wouldn't be able to do. Maybe after I complete it you all will be right and I will have wasted my $ but I hope not lol

I'm not doubting you but most places won't hire someone based on their word. For example I can weld like a sonofabitch bit can't find part time work since I'm not certified

Good point. I am still pretty hopeful about this school thing. Since I can't seem tp find anywhere that will hire without school. I will keep this thread updated though if my opinions change or I find work after I get out of the Marines.

I started work for an International truck dealership at 15. I drove myself to work even before i had my license lol. I'll be 31 next month and diesel's have been my career ever since. That paper looks good but your experience level is what gets you noticed and makes you money.
