It's okay man. I either will end up doomed to be another dud stuck in the military for 20 or a wild ass oil working hillbilly in Alaska  pretty much where I started

What would be a better plan then? I can work on motors/cars well but I dont have anything formal to rely on other than personal experience. I'm a driver for an executive office right now (CGs driver) for you military folks but dont have schooling other than your basic USMC stuff...

I work in the heart of nascar country. I have some of the biggest race shops within a 15 mile radius and have alot of friends in the business. I will tell you that if you dont have an inside contact in the race shops that really speaks up for you it is near impossible to get a job. If you do get a job it is LONG hours and the race shops are more streamlined than ever. Most jobs are more like working on an assembly line than what you dream of working in a race shop. You will get assigned one job and do it over and over and over. If you spend you time in a tech school and manage to get a job it will most likely be complete grunt work that no one else wants to do until you pay your dues for a while. You may pay your dues and get promised to move up, but if your team had a bad season the team owners really enjoy completely cleaning house of all employees and starting fresh with an entire new team. It is a common practice that I see often. There is no job security in the nascar seen. You will learn to jump from team to team and work a ton of hours and not have stability.

Gotcha...too bad I don't know ya better or id ask to be put into contact with some folks. I do really like the hands on aspect of PCU tho that they teach you actual pit skills vs theory

Good call...how'd they get in? I just can't fathom it being impossible. I would really love to drive but know thats a lost cause unless youre rich or born with the right last name.

My brother in law moved from AZ to Indy with nothing right out of HS and worked at a Advanced auto parts store close to the race shops up there for years. He wanted to get in the Drag car scene though. He made friends with a Indy Lites car owner through the store and got a gig with them. Didn't pay hardly shit and when he wasn't on the road he still worked at Advance. After 3-4 years of that he got a break and a chance to go work for Andretti Green in their Lites program. After a couple years there he got moved to Marco's team for a year then on to Danica's team and is now doing ok and is somewhat stable because he's been in the industry and knows most of the people involved.
BUT like said one bad season and it's very common to clean house and if no one else did that year you're stuck without a job and the skills learned working on race cars don't mean much to many other places of employment as he's now finding out. He wants to get out but can't get a job anywhere else because being able to change a tire in 4 seconds isn't really helpful most places in the real world.

Well put Matt. I have a military background that can get me a good paying job I just don't like my job. So if nothing else I can work for one of the big 3 letter agencies in DC (intel field) . I want to go to a trade school just not sure which one. Ive considered Denver Auto and Diesel or the like to get ASE certified but haven't made up my mind

Thats an awesome picture. I'm not saying I want to go out and work on a Cup team out of the gate either ARCA or lower is okay. I just eventually want to get into the NASCAR circuit.

ARCA would be a good start amd those teams are spread out a little more too. A lot of those guys are drivers/owners friends who volunteer their time though. AT least the local ARCA guys i know do.

UNOH has a good high performance motorsports degree with machine work and what not

go to UNOH i went to NTI sucked bad when i went but im also a reacer at heart... just my 2 cents

nti cost 30 grand for a year, and you dont get any of your ASE stuff..
also UNOH is just a much better place they have motorsports teams.. nti says they will help you with this and that but........

when i went i had a job with a team, once NTI found out about it they made me quit the job..

pm me for more info on NTI if you want... again i say its a waste of money

Figured I would update this...after a great deal pf research it looks like UNOH is where I will be attending. Really like the class schedule and seems to be the best all around school for me. Still need to write greendmaxs brother and see if he thinks it is a good option tho

Knew those threads would make it here eventually. For every dude that goes to these diesel tech schools with more any sense about them, there's probably 10 or more slap dicks going just cause diesels are cool & they think they'll know as much & be as capable as shops like Scheid at "turning up" their ragged out 12V.

I've personally known 3 that have gone. 2 make nearly 6-fig salaries managing or owning shops now while the other might as well had dropped a bag of hundreds on the ground & lit em on fire cause he's trimming trees make a little better than min wage! He's got a $25k piece of paper though.
