ok paint is all done, I happened to have JUST the right amount of paint left over from painting jed's mirrors.

Its drying right now, in about an hour Ill spray the clear coat. IMO it already looks nice with the metallic, hopefully it will look even better once the clear is on it...

Under The Hood
The hot pipe and downpipe will be high temp black, and wrapped in header wrap (also painted black to try to help it from coming apart)

The cold pipes and intercooler pipes will be painted GM "dark charcoal metallic". My buddy Tacojedbob has a dark charcoal/gray metallic LLY and we smoothed/painted his mirrors a while ago...I was trying to decide what color to paint my pipes and while digging through some stuff I found some of the left over paint.

I figured it would look neat with the metallic flake paint. A little more exciting than just plain 'black', but still conservative enough to not look terrible the second it gets some dirt/grease on it. Obviously Ill clear coat over the pipes too.

I didnt really want to do some wild color because Im too cheap to go buy nice paint, and Id be worried Id paint it [with some ridiculous color], stand back, and say "huh....why the hell did I think that would look good...?" :D

what do you guys think of that paint choice...? Im going to shoot the first coat in about 2 minutes so I guess its too late to change my mind now...!

I like the dark charcoal metallic myself. Thats what color my truck is. Its kinda green in the light, black in the shade, and sparkly at times.

I know the feeling about stupid colors, did you ever see the picture of my indoor pulling stack? It looked good on the test piece but the finished product was butt ugly.

ok here are some pics. I dont claim to be a professional autobody painter by any means, but I think they turned out ok, no drips/runs or anything. :)

the color looks nice IMO. Let me know what you guys think.

doing this build was really the first time I got to test out my bandsaw, it worked like a champ, rock solid and cut right through the piping. Notice how im cutting/holding that downpipe v-band flange in position; pressure treated 4x4 as a 'fence', and a crescent wrench to hold it/shim it up straight because the v-band part made it sit angled on the table. Im 6' 2" for reference so you can see its a decently tall/big machine...

Did you add more flake or is that what comes in the standard paint?

nah I didnt add anything or do anything special to the paint, im not that sophisticated. :)

Its whatever the paint place mixed/gave me when I asked for "GM dark charcoal metallic"...

Looks good, Ben. So where did you end up putting the fuel filter?

welds look good, were you pushing or pulling the mig gun?

if i had to guess by looking pulling??

try pushing, you can get better bead quality because you can see the weld pool as its not behind the shield cup.

when pushing penetration isnt as good but for piping its more than enough, being doing it at work on 304 stainless process piping sched 10 (1/8" wall) and the welds look 10x better because you can have perfectly even beads

i had never even tried pushing until someone showed it to me a few weeks ago and i'm amazed at the difference, it also makes the overlaps cleaner as you can see them coming
From what Ive learned Foster youre supposed to push gas shielded wire and drag or pull self shielded.

Lookin good Ben whens it going to be up and running?

There is no wrong way the physical reaction doesn't change, it just changes which direction the heat is transferred , the beads and penetration will be different on if your pushing or pulling but both will work fine .

ok I just went for a test drive. I think I might have some boost leaks but Im not sure.

Otherwise no leaks/funny noises/pipes rubbing on anything/parts coming loose. :)

Its definitely going to take some tuning to make this big (sorry, bigISH) turbo work. The MPI twins were small enough so it was bolt on and go and they worked great. Im not sure if the S480 is even really spooling?? HeepJeeps has my boost gauge sensor (we forgot to take it off my piping when we put my old twins on his LBZ) so other than looking at the map sensor reading I have no idea what its doing for boost.

So yeah, initial impressions/thoughts...not really impressed. :( These twins arent half as loud as my old MPI twins either.

I dont know why the MPI twins were so loud but my S480 twins have nothing on them. You would think bigger turbo, even louder but I guess not.

I also STUPIDLY forgot to weld a bung in the cold pipe so I can see what the pressure is between the two turbos. Im not going to wreck my 'nice' paint job so I might either drill and tap the compressor housing of the S480 or drill/tap the mouthpiece going into the stock turbo.

Its also pouring rain here. Hasnt rained in probably 2 weeks and the day I finish the damn thing it turns into a pond here. Great.

I did try a somewhat decent sized tune, I think its 2000us and like 16* of timing (remember I have big dipper injectors) and it really took off..it was kind of scary. The completely stock LLY tune (well, stock plus the injectors) that Ive been running 99% of the time worked great on the MPI twins; it was fun to drive, spooled fast. The stock tune kinda sucks on the S480 twins... EGT's are kinda high too. I mean not like "high high", but high for twins.

So like I said, I think ill have to play around with tuning on it before it really starts to work well...
