Im looking at moving in the next 6 months or so and wanted help choosing where. Being in the military my options are limited and here's what they are.
Omaha, NE
Quantico, VA
Norfolk, VA
VA Beach, VA
Arlington, VA
Denver, CO

Things about me...don't care for big cities and don't mind a reasonable commute to work. Like fishing, hunting, camping and general outdoors. The Mrs is soon to be a school teacher so a job for her is a must. Help me out guys!

I would choose Denver. Thats about as far east as I would ever go I think. The east coast doesnt have enough mountains for me and I think people on the east coast are kinda wierdos! LOL :joker:

so you've obviously never been to the mountains in VA? little thing called the appalachians :thumb::rofl:

I dont call those mountains, theyre hills. I need glaciers and 10,000'+ snow covered peaks.

My uncle was a long haul truck driver and before he passed I spent 3 summers with him. Ive been through 38 states and all the way across Canada twice.

Sometime when I get a chance I will take some pics of where I live and post them up. Its ocean front with mountain/glacier views. It just doesnt get any better IMO.

Some random pictures of the town I live in.

Windsor, CO
I was born and raised in Northern CO, and love it up here. I might have to move to south denver/castle rock area which I'm not to excited about but will manage, depending on the fiancee job. As far as for the OP, I would live on the outskirts of Denver area. I live in a town called Windsor which is up by Fort Collins and Loveland, and is really not that far from Denver and Cheyenne I think about 45minutes and your in Denver unless bad weather and losts of traffic, but its managable. I also Hunt/Fish/Camp and its never a long drive to any of these places, the farthest I drive is for Elk hunting up in Rifle CO. wich is about 4 hrs maybe less. Also Lots of schools up around here :thumb: and lots of other smaller towns to live in. Nothing against Denver, just too many people for me.

But you gotta do whats best for you and the family. Good luck.

Thanks for the input Wes. Looks like it's a tad more south at Peterson AFB which is find by me. An AFB is a dream compared to our USMC ones haha

I would think Nebraska's cost of living would be the cheapest. Good hunting and fishing. You could even travel over to Iowa for some great hunting. Midwest is a good place to live for the most part.

Upstate N.Y
My Dad spent 5 years in west Virginia and I frequently went down there to hunt and fish with him. There is some really good fishing and hunting down there. The whitetails are a little smaller in body size then upstate N.Y. but they do not lack anything in the rack department. Overall it seemed like a nice place to live, he had a 450k log cabin he lived in and only paid something like $1,200 in taxes anually, that same house would cost you nearly $1,200 a month here in N,Y, taxes:rolleyes: Point being the cost of living seems reasonable there. My wife is also a school teacher and from what she has told me the wages vary greatly state by state and it seems teaching jobs are getting harder to get with the current economy. So maybe have your wife/girlfriend put some fealers out for teaching positions or maternity leaves in your selected areas.

Yes, Colorado is great for the mountains. I am up there all the time. The bad part is waiting in traffic for 4 hours trying to get back into Denver and the front range. You really have to time your commute back to the city or plan on staying in a motel.

I say anywhere but Denver, CO since we have too many people moving here as it is. :D

That's a good point. She graduates this May with her bachelors so moving should be timed perfectly so she can get her credential in whatever state we end up in.

Yup I'd say definitely in this economy put out the feelers on a teaching job today on the stability. Sounds like that is going to dictate where you eventually end up.

I'm sure your aware of all the state/city cuts that are going to take place this year and beyond. It will be ugly no doubt about it!

Good luck.

And to the poster as far as East Coast being weirdo's , not all of us but you make a good point there are many weirdo's out West also, been there. :D

I'm from Colorado and I hated Denver, however, if you like fishing/hunting everything like that is close. I just hated the city itself, seemed dirty to me.

I have been through Omaha a few times, from driving thru, didnt like it. Seemed dirty too lol.

I guess I really dont like any of the other places on your list either. Any chance they offer something more west??? lol.

If I had to choose I'd go with Denver, because I like the outdoors and such. That being said, I have no idea what the other places on your list are like. Id have to visit before I could give you an answer that would actually help.
