Mike L and my SCIV and 1058

First off, I want to thank Mike for all the help this weekend. I was down to L.A. to do the EFI diesel tuning class and wanted to get a built trans and converter at the same time. He scheduled myself and Dave (blksmoke I believe) for the same day, Friday before the school.

Dave was getting the exact same combo as myself, and since the 1058's are brand new they are in short supply. He had two converters waiting for us Friday but Suncoast had accidently sent a 1056 instead of a 1058. Mike got Suncoast to overnight air a 1058 for Saturday, got me a rental car so I could head to Temecula for the school, and arranged to be there Saturday to install the trans/converter for me, and meet me at the shop after I drove back over from the school to pick up my truck.

He and Suncoast went overboard to take care of everything, and I am very appreciative to both of them. How people handle problems when they come up says a lot about them, and both are top-notch.

Now, my thoughts on the trans and converter......................:D Love it! The trans shifts awesome but not harsh. The converter is like a slingshot, kinda winds up like a rubber band and then releases the energy............. :driving: I do not know how better to describe it. It is not slippy at all, in fact it drives like stock when driven normally. The tcc locks much quicker, but a nice firm lockup, not harsh at all. But the way it multiplies torque is insane, you will definitely notice the traction difference in 2wd! ;)

I also made a couple errors in my TransGo Jr. kit and Mike was kind enough to point them out and take care of them without chewing me out, very cool. I drilled one of the holes in the separator plate wrong, but apparently a couple others have done the exact same thing, including an Allison engineer, so I felt better. No idea how I did it as I was positive I had correctly marked them before heading to the drill press. I also lost a little filter that falls out of the valve body when turned over; never saw it, but apparently it was not there when I delivered the truck to Mike.......... :p

Thanks again to Mike L, and anyone considering a trans or that converter should make plans to get one, huge difference and worth every penny.

Yep, I had a very similar experience when Mike did mine.

What kind of HP and torque do you have? I should prolly look at your sig... that would tell me.

Congrats on the trans! Wait till you go to the track and lean on it, it'll respond nicely.

No sig? I see the website in your sig, I think you sat right next to me in the class! You are tall, dark hair, had a twin small block as your desktop? HP 15" laptop? I was the stinky ass smoker sitting next to you....cough cough. My Bro Jason was the big SOB sitting at the end of the table.

don't know on the power. Need to go to the track. I'm running a 500 rwhp tune but it's so modded I don't know where I'm at, up or down. I think the total power is close, but less as I still run the cat. But I've picked up the part throttle mid-range performance a bunch. I'm trying to go fast without smoke, so it's a challenge.

Cool, fast and no smoke. We'll get there, we just have to keep honing in the fuel/rail/boost. Good luck.:)

Glad to hear more good reports on the 1058. That's the converter I'm planning on using in my truck.

Did some more datalogging, and so far this converter/trans has netted me just over .6 seconds quicker from 0 to 100 mph. 0-60 mph is about .42 quicker and the rest is likely due to the trans shifting crisper. 2000 rpm seems to be the sweet spot for a 4wd launch for me, 2100 had me spinning all four tires......... I need to get to the track as a stickier surface may allow a bit more launch.

I forgot, I did a new trans tune to allow less torque reduction, so although the shift points in tow/haul remained stock there is less defueling now, so the reduction in e.t. comes from the converter and the built trans and being allowed to reduce defueling (although you couldn't really feel much if any defueling in my prior trans tune).

My first impressions (yes it is a bowling night):
1: Holy shit
2: I have no speedo (lets worry about that tomorrow)
3: Holy shit
4: Very, very, very, very, very crisp shifts. I have never had that before with ATS. (I have no copilot whatsoever yet b/c my old one is lost somewhere)
5: Holy shit
6: I like it :D
More to come tomorrow, I just had to vent before I went to bed. Thank you Mike L and suncoast! ATS can.... (cont. on one word thread :D)
