Medium duty manifolds and high flow up pipes

As part of my build I wanted to upgrade the exhaust system in an effort to keep drive pressures at a minimum. I was a little hesitant to go the header route just because of the cost, so I decided to look for a set of medium duty manifolds. I found some in the garage sale section here that Rhall was selling (thanks Rob) without up pipes. I got to talking to Turbo Buick 6 (Paul), and he said he would be interested in building me a set of pipes. I wanted to go with the biggest pipe I could, which was something like 2" ID with the stock flanges because the bolts would interfere with anything larger. There's a little sneak preview in his avatar right now, but he's supposed to be sending me pictures later. They look pretty sweet so far. :coolspot:

Looks very nice. I am curious though to how big can you go until you are starting to loose heat and turbo spool is affected. Kinda like what 05smoker went through. It might only be an issue for sled pullers but I have heard stories about guys not being able to light big chargers on the line because of not being able to build enough heat.

As short of a run as this is, I don't think it will be a big issue. Ed's problems were more pronounced due to the location of his charger. That being said, I think I'm gonna check into some of those heat blanket things that Trent got for his headers and piping.

Also keep in mind that 321 SS and inconel does a very good job of retaining heat. I belive that spooling has less to due with volume and more to due with design. The collector syle headers on my truck and up-pipes have a HUGE volume compared to stock stuff yet they spool better.

Cool Josh! Glad you found a set after all. Just wished I had twins to have both installed on my truck but just the driverside has made an improvement. Keep us posted on your results and I would definately get those blankets. I like the way the medium duty's have alot more cast iron to them to help retain heat in the exhaust system.

2 ID should be fine. My new setup is 2 OD only because of the extra length. I wrapped mine and had no problem spooling it on the sled this time.

On my first set, the flanges had to be remachined to get rid of some warping from the welding. They still wouldn't ever spool even after that.

Where did you get the expansion bellows from?

They are old stock from a Indy car team. They are inconel and run about $200 each from most places. I bought out the old stock for a fraction of the price and am passing on some savings till I run out.
