Losing Prime

Ok friends, have a good one on my hands. A few months ago I noticed my factory header was starting to wick and get dust collecting on it(have a cat adapter btw) so I got an o-ring kit and rebuilt it. 3rd time I've rebuilt the pos too. While I had the head torn apart I just happened to hit the primer button over a shop towel, noticed a bunch of glitter on the towel. Looked closer and it was straight metal shavings. Brake cleaned entire head and resembled. Took a picture of the towel and showed it to rob(atp) a couple days later and he said he'd never seen that other than on the cp4's. Cut open cat and both airdog filters, found no metal at all. Then a week later I noticed fuel on my frame rail, inspect and found header leaking bad. Rolled the little o-ring on the heater element and cut it during install(dumb). Truck started losing prime at this point. Rebuilt header again and no leaks. While I was in there noticed the fuel hose from header to ficm starting to wick at my hose clamp, replaced both fuel hoses on header. Ever since then it fires instantly and dies about 5 seconds in after sitting for more than a couple hours. Removed intake horn and checked valley, no leaks or wicking. Cannot find a visible fuel leak anywhere. Had to let pump run for a solid 20 seconds before starting so it wouldn't die right after. Even after letting the pump run it would surge quite a bit and act like it was sucking air until I let it run for a few minutes. Then yesterday my airdog quit altogether. Checked for power at the pump connector and it's present. So pump crapped out amd waiting on a new one. If I hit the primer a few times it firms up then after engine start it doesn't die. Think this is all the airdog or do I have something else going on? Anyone else experience this?

Sometimes they don’t like pulling fuel through. Try hooking your hoses together.
Ya I experienced this last winter when bad fuel plugged the filter. Wouldn't run at all. I just haven't had time to bypass it yet. Just seeing if anyone else has experienced these symptoms before. Thanks Burn Down. I'll pm you with results if you're interested.

Pumps don’t usually die like this, it is either all or nothing. Sounds like to separate issues. However after fixing the ad the leak should be very easy to find.

I know it's weird. But yes I agree, have compounding issues going on. I'll get ad pump replaced then go from there. However, even when my pump was working fine I never did find any external leaks.

My air dog had some issues internally after 4-5 years. Kept losing prime and just shutting the truck off for about a month. I ended up putting a sump on and going with a fuel lab lift pump and that fixed all my issues. Even manged to get more rail pressure at WOT.

Ya fires up hot or cold like I said then dies about 5 seconds into running. I do oil samples every change and 2k mi ago there was no fuel in oil. Its not injectors or cp3. Pretty sure its coming from the oem filter head.

I had a filter head that would leak down if the truck sat. With the AD, it does not leak down. it seems to only be a Vacuum leak not a pressure leak.

I have seen vacuum leaks before that would hold pressure. You may have a filter head issue where its leaking down. Before you try to start the truck, try priming it to see if it will start and run without dying.

Yessir thats exactly what it is. Prime it before starting and it doesn't lose prime after fire up. Have a buddy here in town that has an extra header, going to try that before I swap my ad out.

That’s your bast bet then. I would just order an lbz head and be done with it.

Any dd vendors you would recommend for that?

Got it figured out! It was the ad all along. New 165 4g fixed everything. Before the new ad I borrowed a known good header from BurnDown and it still lost prime. After 4g install no loss of prime and no leakage.
