Some guy called me today he was concerned about his truck. I asked him what the problem was and he sayed his truck was getting 4mpg. Its a 04 duramax. Can someone help me out here. He sayed he just change the fuel filter about 300 miles ago and the truck runs perfect. He only gets 220 miles to a tank of fuel which is the big 35 gallon tank its a 4 door long bed 4X4 please help.

220 miles w/ a 35 gallon tank (maybe 33 usable) gives him 6.7 mpg.

what's he towing or doing w/ the truck 220 miles = 200 or so trips down the 1/4 mile.

Does it run normal? idle without smoke? what power additions does he have? Maybe he has a leak problem?

does he run a programmer?

is this hand calculated?

I dont even see how thats possible if the truck is running normal:confused:

maybe without calibrating his tires the computer is off so his mileage is off also. coputersays 1 thing but he actuallt went farther on those big tires.

make sense? :) when i had my tires 1st put on my truck i was going alot farther than my dash said on mileage. so how long ago did he put his tires on?

leak in his tank?

Well for starters with 35's, he can add about 13% to his mileage traveled if he hasn't had his speedo recalibrated for the larger tires. That will get him close to what he actually is putting on for mileage. Also the most accurate way I have found is fill to the top. Drive it. Then fill to the top again and use the quantity pumped in as the fuel used. And hand calculate. But still if he is using 33 - 35 gal to go 250 miles, that's pretty sad.

Someone is either stealing fuel, he has a leak or pretty soon his dipstick tube will start to leak out the top if you know what I mean....

4 miles to the gallon, Must be a lot of boost present all the time, or no boost and a lot smoke.

That's a hell of a lot fuel????

I got some new info from the guy and tell me what u think i am linking this problem to the turbo and this is why. The previous owner of this truck had a 3 stage chip in it what i was told. He doesnt no what kinda or anything eles i am thinking more along the lines of a hyperpac or a superchip thing the truck did have a monitor with the display he knows of that for sure. he told me when he lays the truck to the floor the turbo has a cling noise to it im thinking the previous owner ran the turbo hot or had to much boost and done something to the vanes or the turbin. I told him to take the grab the turbin and see if it spins freely or makes any noise. Told him to wiggle it and see if theres any play in the turbo its self and check it to see if it looks like its been burned he is bringing the truck over this week or next week so we can furthure dienose the probley. He sayed at 60 mph the truck does not have any turbo noise once so ever and that when he lays into it She blows smoke until the turbo is spooled. This is bone stock tuning. So Is there anything i should check when the truck comes here?

Thanks Kurt

Is there any chance he has a bum tune with the vane position too far numerically low, or a wasegate that is stuck open?
