Ive got a smokey idle too

Well ever since I did the recent mods to the truck ive been having a very smokey idle.

I did pull the motor and do studs, .060 gaskets, and an S400 charger. The fuel pressure regulator and suction pump are also modified.

Since this I have had a very smokey idle that is blue/white but only smells like diesel. Doesnt seem like a headgasket.

Now what happens though is that once it gets up to operating temp(170-190*) this goes away.

Also if below operating temp it sputters until the turbo lights and gets some heat built up.

Basically its running like a low compression ratio, big turbo, big injector pulling tractor, running sort of rough and smokey until the temps get up and the turbo lights.

It really seems like its just not getting enough heat.

It also pops every once and awhile like it misses and will makea smoke ring and such.

I did log it and at first is was commanding 18,000psi of rail pressure at idle but the tune only called for 5,000. After 3 different flashes it slowly worked its way down to 5,000 again.

Injector balance rates are all good with the highest one being -2.5

Im lost, while others think its cool, it is annoying and i dont think it should be happening.

I will get a video tomorrow after I replace yet another serpentine belt which is another issue I have been having for awhile. In the last few months ive shredded 4 belts. The belt will slip off and ride on the edge of the tensioner pulley (the front edge iaway from the motor. Its liek soemthing isnt in line but the dealer said everything was, this was happening before the motor was pulled too.

any ideas??

thanks guys,.

When the compression is dropped, it seems to make a lot of that stuff happen. Mine likes to stay cold too.

The belt is most likely the tensioner. Get a new FACTORY tensioner if that's what you deem to be wrong. Trust me i've been there and done that. I have a dozen or so shredded belts to show for it. The carquest tensioner was worse than the original factory tensioner.

First of all belt shreading is you tensioner. It looks ok but trust me that's your problem. I went through about 3 belts before we figured that out. It gets too weak and when when you give it fuel it whips a bit too much and flips the belt over a little and shreads the edge. What kind of tune are you running? Is it one of your own building or did someone else build your tune? If you might try and run a stock tune for a bit and see if the smoke at idle goes away. Blowing smoke rings, we had an old John Deere that would pop and do that once in a while.:D

Thanks guys ill try the tensioner, it has only happened when accelerating hard or when a sudden downshift occured.

The tuning is mine and it still does it on a stock tune. Ive played with the tuning a bit trying to get it to go away but it doesnt.

Mine doesn't totally clean up the white smoke until it is up to temp. The latest tune has a raised idle rpm and some other tricks that seem to help out a bit. With my compression and cam I don't think I can expect much more.

have the timing tables been changed in the idle range? What was the ambient temp. during that video?

You just changed the head gaskets and nothing else with the internals of the engine, right?

No they havent, and it still does it on a stock tune.

Ambient temp was a tad chilly at 40*

just gaskets, nothing else.

It started out at 18,100 when I first was running it and noticing this issues. After flashing a tune in it 3 different times(unaltered tune) it decided to go back down to between 4800 and 5000

Thats weird:confused: Does desired pressure match actual in your logs

yes it does, for some reason it was commanding that much. My tune didnt call for it but it decided to, then it went down.

I dont know How I couldve bent a rod without running it, unless i bent one with the stock charger before i pulled it out. but, I know the protrusion was within spec when it was out. Unless I already bent one with this new setup. That would be shortlived fun.
