Is "real" mainstream music dead?

Recently I've gotten back into playing bass again for a hobby that actually relieves stress versus create it. Ive finally sat down and taken the time for the first time to learn about all of the fancy equipment I just "had to have" back in the day but never took the time to learn how to use any of it. 6-10 years later here I am finally doing it. I've always listened for the bass line in any song, and I don't know if its just because its a natural thing for me but if the song doesn't have a good bass line I feel it sucks, but then I'll listen to the other instruments to see what there is and enough bands have good talent. When I say good bass line I don't necessarily always crazy and elaborate, just something that fits the song well with a little bit of the players flair, kind of lets you know hes not just standing in a corner getting a check. Although if I hear a song with a good bass line, i'll try to find the name of it right away so I can learn it later.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Dave Matthews, RHCP and Blues traveler. Of course i'll still play some Tool and Primus. I'll sometimes play some Mudvayne or other heavy bands that have really good bass lines, but I'm just not a huge fan of the "muddy" sounds.

Anyways, I listen to a variety of new music and of the new music out there, there doesn't seem to be a lot of mainstream "real" music percentage wise. DMB isn't as popular on the radio with new stuff around here anymore, but they are still well known and that band can put together real music. They've got one of the top 10 drummers of all time, a great bassist, crazy violinist, saxophonist (dk how the new guy is, im sure he's good too), and many others, the only boring instrument is daves guitar which is fine, hes only wanted to play rhythm and his main instrument is his voice. Put together its a style of music thats not really duplicated on as big of a scale. RHCP has quite the variety of styles out there, seems to be a song that fits everyone, funk rock is their core and it shows, although I think you'd have an easier time getting grandma to go see DMB than Flea running around naked. Its sad blues travelers bassist died so early, he was pretty underrated.

Anyways to the point of all of this, RHCP and DMB are just a couple bands that come to mind that are still making new music and going strong. My girlfriend likes country music, she likes RHCP and DMB a lot as wel, but country is still her favorite. So I find myself at enough country concerts and kind of feel the only difference between modern country and pop/hip-hop is the things they talk about in the lyrics which half the time don't really have a true story behind them but are catchy and relate to the masses. I don't mind the concerts but I often find myself bored because I don't know the words to songs, I usually only listen to the musical aspect of it which almost seems to be non-existent in the popular songs. Theres some that are okay, but they aren't the ones you'll ever hear on the radio it seems. I couldn't help but laugh when we were at the Eric Church concert and they brought out a piano so he could play a few notes. From what I've seen the guy can play piano, but in this song it sounds like a 5 year old finger punching hunting around for notes. Every once and awhile I'll bicker with here about how boring it is since there is no "music".

Then I get on these forums and here plenty of the other players talking about the same things. The days of a "band" are gone in nashville. They have the members that tour, and the members that record. They usually don't let the touring artist do the recording and they usually have a handful of people on call to fill the positions at random.

To me Its kind of sad that most people graduating high school don't know music, and the ones that do know music are simply the "band geeks". Other than them, the rest just see (IMO) one big moneymaking scheme. The record labels find a way to take events in a teens life have a pretty face sing it in a catchy way, and there off to the races. It seems to days of a band making music and people discovering them and liking them for the music are gone, now its almost like one big advertisement. They use psychology to determine what you like and how to build a song around that. I think I saw their success rate is only 5% now. Must be why you hear the same 20 songs repeated every couple hours on the "new hit music "channels.

Just me rant for the day I guess, I will admit I enjoy enough of the "cool" music, but more in a hysterical way than a musical enjoyment way.

We had a similar thread going on CompD.

98% of the music out of Nashville sucks. Speaking of Eric Church... I don't think he could find words for half of his songs on the "Chief" album. He was just making sounds... "bow, bow, bowbow".

If you want real music, check out the Texas country music scene.

I agree 100% music just isnt the same as it used to be. A canadian band called big wreck just released a new album thats got me excited about music again. Check it out and let me know what you think. Ian Thornleys voice gives me goose bumps every time I hear this song.

This are my 2 favorite guys. I might have a different style of music than most of yall, but both of these guys really sing from the heart. Both local bands. The second video is the singer from an upcoming band called SundyBest. Mitch, I haven't heard of that band. Do they play locally?

Face it radio sucks! Every damn station (pick any genre) does the same bs, I really feel insulted by the recording companies deciding what we like within our choice of genre, then paying off clear channel to jam it down our throats till we're f'in sick of hearing 20 times a day. I have switched to listening to news radio only or someone god but unknown on soundcloud.

This. When I was working nights in the pulp mill we had the radio going. You could always count on the same 6 or 7 songs, basically all night. I know it's late and not many people listening, but it's like they seriously had a short playlist on random, all night every night, same songs over and over. Day time wasn't much better. I see a few of you guys talking about southern/texas rock/country. Check out Whiskey Myers. Some pretty good stuff IMO :D

I won't even get into what I prefer to save most of you the eye rolling:thumb:

but the point is valid in all types of music, some less so but it's still there. at work we listen mostly to rock and there aren"t enough stations in Denver to get away from the same 10-15 songs and the hip hop stations are even worse. :help:

We've got a station in the area that goes against the grain. Its just simply called Charlie and their slogan is that they play everything. They do what people want generally, they don't make people like it. They tried a morning show but people wanted the music back because they were the only station playing it in the mornings so they dropped the morning show and switched to having no commercials until 11am.

The cool thing about it is that its an unmanned station, there's no DJ. There will be recorded commentary by "Charlie" and sometimes his mother but that's it. The commentary is always a.short numerous line that takes a stab at something current in the news or their own station. Never more than 15-30 seconds.

Their other motto is the no repeat work week. They won't repeat a song from 9-5 . Most all of the music is 80s and 90s alternative rock and pop type music, with a ton of one hit wonders. They play some older stuff as well as some newer stuff and they also play the stuff that you never knee about, like peaches.

Our local hard rock station does a very good job of getting new music out and are recognized as the starting point for many bands. Hard rock is an area that seems to still be based off of survival of the band by their music for the most part, not the other way around like pop and country. There is enough times though they will overplay songs.

I'm liking RHCPs new album, been working on a bunch of of their songs lately.

I'm not a big country fan. Regular rock has dried up alot in the past decade. Though, as of late, ive been listening to and going to a few of these bands shows.

cant stand todays country. its not even country IMOP. its gotta be early 90s and older country for me. the radio station up in flagstaff where i use to live had an AM country station played all the good old stuff. Miss that station down here. closest i can get is prime country on XM and outlaw but even those dont always have the good stuff on there.

Anymore, ive been listen to rock just cause the only thing i can really stand to be played on the radio and their talk show is funny in the mornins. there are some good songs they play (satelite by rise against, and i like godsmacks new cover on rocky mountain way) but the other crap........yeah just wont go there.

I agree with all this. I just listen to Pandora radio and set up a station for reckless kelly or Roger Creager. Lots of good small town names out there need to move up.

I used to listen to pandora quite a bit, but there ability to stay fresh and current in the dubstep/brostep got a bit tiring plus it seemed to struggle to properly group the music and deemed Skrillex as the end all be all of dubstep.

Fortunately I meet a bunch of great local dj's and just follow them on soundcloud.

Brantley's got some good stuff. Same with Justin Moore IMO

we had a classic rock station that started out like that. FRANK. hardly ever played the same song, no commercials, just occasional plug saying 'this is Frank FM'. Was good while it lasted, same as the others now...
