Intermittent Service Brake System ding

Saturday I was driving home and all of a sudden the service brake system light and ding came on while I was driving. I stopped just fine (no noticable difference braking) and turned off the truck and drove about 12 miles home and no issue. DIdnt drive for the rest of the weekend. However this morning, driving to work, after about 20 minutes, I stopped at a light and the light/ding came on for a split second and went away. Kept driving about 2-3 miles and it came on again while I was pulling into work and stayed on until I turned it off.

Any ideas? My truck seems to brake just fine. I havent checked my brake fluid yet, but im curious to see what else could cause this?

Common in the duramax's in general or the LLYs? It's weird, It all of a sudden started coming on nearly every key turn, either after 10 minutes or so of driving or immediatly when I turn the truck on.

I did some more searching, except most searches show people having the ABS light on as well.

The cts won't scan brake codes.

Check the ground under the drivers door on the frame

Yeah I realized that about the CTS after I posted this yesterday.

I plan on scanning it with another scanner today at lunch.

This is really annoying. I cant go like one month without a random issue popping up and driving me crazy lol Thats what I get for driving a 10 year old truck I guess

I had some similar issues with the service brake warning light but in my case one of the batteries had a bad cell.

May not be your issue but a place to start.

If i recall right, the brake system is checked at startup and when the glow plugs are on draining down the battery even further, it pops the idiot light for lack of voltage.

I bought this battery tester as a result and even found the new batteries i tried to put in were bad.

So far no re-occurrence of the service brake system.

Thanks.

I personally have never replaced by batteries in the 2 years Ive owned my truck. Never had an issue with voltage except when a rat chewed at a wire near my alternator.

I do have a glow plug code that pops every now and again, but not every time.

I dont really know much at all about how the abs module or speed sensors work in relation to each other. I dont know anything at all really. I'm hoping its just an issue of something needing to be cleaned lol

We all look for things that are broken so we have an excuse to take stuff apart haha.

Let us know what comes up. And as mentioned above, weak batteries do crazy things to these trucks. You can have them tested.

Lol thats the problem. I dont want to take anything apart again after dealing with headgaskets. Some days I just wanna trade my truck in for a low mile LBZ and keep it completely stock...but that only lasts for a few minutes. Haha

I'm hoping I will get some sort of code later today at lunch the maybe I will be pointed in the right direction.

I had the ABS light come on intermittently a couple of months ago. It turned out to be a wheel speed sensor on the front DS hub. One of the push in clips that hold it to the UCA broke and let the wire rub on the tire. Finally rubbed through he wire enough that the light stayed on.

before you go buying anything, go check your master cyl and make sure its full. the ebrake light being on and nothing else when the ebrake is fully disengaged means the brake fluid is low. that may also be why the DIC says to service it.

i do find it funny everyone turns to using a computer to find the issue first though. funny how things have changed so much

Bingo!

Check the fluid level, the fluid level sensor, and wiring...

Usually this (fluid level) is the only thing that will turn on the (brake) warning light only...if it were an ABS problem, or something wrong with the ABS module, it should turn on the (ABS) light in addition to the (brake) light...

Sometimes i feel SO stupid lol. Something as simple as brake fluid...I checked and it was low. I will grab some more and refill it.

Now does brake fluid normally get low over time? Or is there a leak that is common that could cause this?

always good to check the simple things before going after the big stuff :D.

yes, as brake pads wear, fluid will drop. if your pads still have alot of life in them, you might look for a leak somewhere.

For what its worth, I had the same problem on my 2004.5.

I worked at a dealer so i scanned it and found a code (don't remember it atm).

Checked si and found a bulletin to update the ebcm.

Updated the ebcm and that fixed it.

Thanks,

I used a scanner my dad has at his shop and found no codes. So far, it turned out to be low brake fluid like these other guys suggested. Just a stupid mistake on my part
