LB7: Hsp twin with ihi shaft brake

Well I have a lb7 with lbz pump ,idaho rob tuning, hsp 475 over stock with batmo on stock and running 52 max psi boost.
I have a ppe valve on stock charger.
Anyway yesterday ad it was building boost it seams to of broke ihi turbo. I have yet to dig into it but pretty sure.
Would it be a good idea to rebuild another factory ihi or upgrade.
I don't want a repeat problem. I rebuilt the ihi last spring and DID NOT have it balanced after adding batmowheel.
What you guys think caused it?
Can I install a 64/75 on a t3 and maintain 50 psi max for now? Like the one in the classifieds

You may have broke the waste gate flap off. Look at the 475 to make sure there's no damage. How much boost was the IHI seeing?

Not getting it balanced may not have helped but I feel the batmowheel is a problem as well. In my IHI testing, the batmowheel barked very easily and took out 2 compressor side piston seals. Barking a turbo can also brake turbine shafts; this is assuming you've broken the turbine shaft like you think.

With compound twins I don't see any reason not running a IHI. If you're wanting big power then a larger high pressure turbo would be better but it depends on your goals. And like said, getting an S300 to fit would require redoing all the tuning.

Here's the story. I stood in it at about 45mph on my 600 rwhp tune. It builds 50-53 psi very fast. About 50 it had a snap sound and all boost fell off and it started smoking oil instantly. Engine still idles smooth but smokes.
I have not ran it longer than 15 sec since it broke. I removed air filter and 475 looks good and feels good but I have oil dripping out v band on down pipe from 475.
I think it broke shaft and kicked wheel off ihi into feed pipe to 475 and now it's pumping oil out hole where the shaft was and is going into 475 and out tail pipe.
Definitely burning oil. No antifreeze smell .

It could of just lost the waste gate and dumped a shit load of fuel while I was at 100% throttle and no boost . I have not ran it long enough to see if it continues to burn because I don't want to stick pieces in engine if it hasn't yet.
I'll be disassembling this tomorrow or tue. I'll be sticking to ihi.
I have no idea on drive pressure. I installed kit and been driving it. What should I look for in drive pressure and how do I adjust it?

I have a 2 qt of oil in intercooler and shrapnel. Looks like I'll be buying a ihi cartridge and looking into a exhaust wheel for my s475. Not sure on exhaust wheel yet but as soon as I remove down pipe I'll know.
I have a spare core ihi so I may need to use the cold side housing. I have a nice piece of cast aluminum in the intercooler. But not a single oil drop in y bridge. I might of got lucky on shrapne notl in engine.
I'll be looking for an intercooler too.

If you broke the flap, oil wouldn't be in the oil cooler or exhaust pipe unless the flap killed the 475 seals. I lost a flap on my stocker over the 480. All it did was get laggy but my hot pipe won't let the flat pass through to the big charger.

I've only ever seen or read batmowheels blowing up in stock chargers without a big brother. I'm I still going good and without issue pushing much more boost than you are OP

I am not sure what happened and in what order. What I do know is that. Ihi shaft broke,pushed wheel and shaft to T6 flange of 475. It pushed oil out oil feed hole to ihi and pumped oil into feed pipe and to 475. Also pumped oil thru hot pipe to intercooler. Ihi intercooler flap is still undamaged.

I just had a ihi shaft failure. I'll fix it and be back rolling soon enough.
I did have a big piece of batmowheel in my intercooler but did it break first or after shaft. I'll never know lol

In a compound arrangement you are not working the valley charger harder than as a single. I have seen compressors come apart but myself have never seen a batmowheel come apart with my own eyes.

I've seen way more batmowheels explode in stock chargers than any other billet wheel.

I've not seen one in person but from my testing I can believe it!!

What people do is install an air regulator between the IHI cover port and waste gate. You then adjust the air regulator such that on your highest tune your EGT's are the lowest and your back pressure isn't high. It takes some time but a good way to get your system dialed in. Did I explain it right James??:D

I dont think the issue with batmo's in a stocker is the wheel itself. I think it is the fact that they are harder on the shaft because they grab more air. So then the shaft breaks, the wheel blasts into pieces, and the assumption is that the wheel failed.

If i recall correctly (I think it was) Mark said something along those same lines. Said he doesnt recommend batmos for stock turbos or S300's because the shaft cant handle it.

We've done over 100 64mm IHI turbo upgrades in the last two years and to my knowledge have yet to have a shaft failure.

I've got a stock LB7 on the shelf as well as aftermarket ones.

This is what Mark said about the batmowheel and TCT in the S300's. Nothing was said about stock frame turbos.
I do NOT recommend BMW or TCT on the S300 carts! The compressor wheel is stronger than the turbine so if you throw any fuel at it what so ever you will snap the shaft! The billet 366 wheel is $399. That's the wheel I use in the S366's.

In a twin application or on an unmodified IHI the batmowheel does good. But once you modify the IHI, there are better options than a batmowheel.
