How hot before you start to see internal engine damage?

Got my truck way to hot pulling a buddies gravel truck home. Got up to 122c before i could even think pulling him up a a hill. Never gonna pull 34 tons down hilly backroads again.

I would not be worried about a temp spike to 251F if it was just a spike. How long did it stay at those temps? Did the DIC tell you you were overheating?

250(121c) is consider "hot" 255 (124c) is very hot and ecm derates fuel then limps
Definitely flush coolant and oil change
Along with differentials and tranny case better they where pretty warm as well

Trans only got to 109 if I remember. Will check the records on my cts. Just a quick question how much coolant does it take wondering if I have enough on hand.

After I got it that hot I had a harness issue and gm had to fix the harness so I could see oil pressure again. Really nerve racking when it said no oil pressure when I started it up again.

Unless you burned off some coolant, you didn't hurt that in the least. Check the mix, if still OK, don't worry.

What you need to worry about is all the other things that took a beating getting that hot. None of the gaskets on the engine like those temps and the oil usually takes a beating.

First thing is to change the oil. Run it for a while, then get the replacement oil analyzed. See if the oil broke down to the point of damaging any of the hard parts.

Gasket wise, the head gaskets are the most susceptible to failure from overheating.

I drag a 20,000 trailer over hill and dale here in Pittsburgh and have gotten hot many, many times.

I have no idea were to get oil analyzed.

A couple years back the water pump gear slipped on it's shaft. I noticed the engine overheating badly up into the red/260* range. This was no load city type driving. A built engine on a 750hp dd tune. I'd stop and let it cool to about 200/210, then when back into the red I'd pull over and let it cool again. It took several stops and about an hour to go 8 miles home. About 6 months later when the crank broke and it was all apart, 4 or 5 of the pistons were several thou. undersize. I think they collapsed during that bout of severe overheating. Also one cylinder was scored enough for an overbore. I didn't think to change the oil or have it analyzed.
