Plain bearing GT55?

Lack of cooling oil might be the cause. You don't run the restrictor like you do with the roller-bearing water-cooled version, because you need tons of fresh cooling oil.

IIRC though, unlike the roller version all the parts are catalog parts. If the compressor wheel itself is OK, a bearing and turbine wheel (includes shaft) might be all that's needed to rebuild.

its ball bearing. i wish it were journal. yeah i havent had a chance to drive it since travis sledpulled it 2 weeks ago until thursday night since my driveshaft was broke. when i drove it around i didnt really get on it any since i was just checking my brake upgrades but i could hear a faint growling sound that i didnt hear the last time i drove it which was before the sledpull. then last night i went to the dragstrip i pulledthe cold pipe off cause i was worried about the small turbo. its fine. then i tryed to make the first pass and it wouldnt spool on the line and wouldnt spool all the way down the 1/8 mile. took the filter off and the 55 was locked down tighter then dicks hat band.

Wow. That falls under the MegaSucks category. You can replace the CHRA, but that costs nearly the same as the whole turbo IIRC.

I went with the plain bearing because of that.

I would take a look at the exhaust. Not something I'm proud to admit, but I dropped a washer in the exhaust years ago, and it froze up the turbo. I removed the washer, and ran the charger for another 6 months with no issues.

Yeah, garretts exchange program is a joke, their customer service sucks too, even when they know they have a problem with a charger, they do nothing about it. Thats why i spend the big bucks this year.... even if its only worth the customer service.

Wow thats crazy. I would never suspect you could tear up a gt55 at our level. Did you buy it new?

if it can be tore up i can find a way evidently. no it was used but the bearings had no play in them when i got it. looked fine.

I'm sponsored by Garrett for now, so I must say they are the Best! :D

However the whole roller bearing rebuild thingy needs to be addressed, either through redesign, or a better customer service program and pricing on rebuilds.

That being said (knock on wood), I ran a "few" Garretts, and never had the either the roller bearing or plain bearing models fail. I've only melted OEM turbos, but I had that coming.

Did you use the oil restrictor on it? Roller bearings will "skid" with too high of oil pressure, they take about 5-10 PSI oil pressure IIRC. Obviously the MFR datasheet is the final word, but that's what I remember.

You can't catch a break that is something else... I can't even imagine how disheartening this is but why not just run a single and nitrous? Sorry to hear though

i dont know what restrictor your talking about. i know the hole going into the top of the turbo for the feed is tiny compared to my old 47's that were journal bearing.

That is the restrictor. You're OK.

Billions of years ago, we would remove restrictors for motorcycles that have roller bearing crankshafts since the oil pressure is very low from the factory (11 PSI max?). Not even sure if any bikes are still roller bearing. Kaw 900's were, so were the big Suzuki's.

yeah no crap! less then 200 miles on the new setup and already had a driveshaft and now a 3k turbo. im honestly thinking about selling the race motor and one good turbo and piping and dual fuelers and going back to a stock motor and getting rid of the truck in general. its been nothing bbut bad luck and its not even fun anymore. ive never liked nitrous just simply because its not there all the time. its only good when the bottle is full.

Dont get me wrong, i love their turbos, and would run one over a borg anyday, i just went ahead and went with precision this year, i like their customer service, there turbos being halfway custom, and they make some steam. Out of curiousity, have you ran a GTX series yet? Ive never tore any bb garrett up until i went with the gtx. Ive known atleast 4 people that say the same.
