350 is pretty impressive in a 800 series KW service truck... Not sure why you would need 500... I'm with Catman, I'm sure it can be done but I have no idea what the life expectancy would be?

Not long, we have a hard time with them in boats, I'm sure you would cook them quickly in a truck under load. You really have to stay on the aftercoolers in the marine aplications, they seem to give more problems than other models. I've not spent much time around the smaller cats, so I dont know them very well. Just enough to be dangerous...:)

I do not like the 3126 or the c7. I've done my shares of replacing the engines due to broken rings under heavy load. C7 had one too many injector and pump issues. I would prefer to stick a c9 in that and be done with.

With all that in mind I may consider looking for one with an LGH duramax or one cheap enough or maybe without a motor to begin with so I can drop a duramax in it, I already have it planned mostly for my personal truck that I have right now, a '93 K1500, although I may also drop a duramax in this one if I can't find one with one to begin with since I'm gonna be getting it stretched and lifted with custom suspension work because I'm gonna be putting MRAP axles under it anyway, that's if I buy one to begin with, have too much time on my hands to be building a monster of a truck while I'm building another car or two

They seem to lumber along pretty well in the 300 range. I'm little to far inland for any Marine stuff.

I don't work on the little tykes either. C175 makes 2500 hp and enough tq to change the rotation of the earth:D

op I think you need to do some more research on what you really want...

i would look for one. Johnny (Gasuout) has a kodiak dmax thats pushing 600-650hp (maybe more) and he beats on that thing regularly. Hes been through a few motors doing WOT pulls with full fuel up sand hills (Glamis) and water pumps never seem to agree with him but his rig is bad ass and hauls ass!

TX of course
One thing the OP needs to consider is the tq of these medium duty engines it might only have 300 hp but they probably have 1000 tq. So think about gearing to make up for less hp.

I'm no cat diesel expert at all by any means, but I know here on the coast the 31 series are hated with all the boaters. Remember marine use = 100% load on the engine. The engine does get a break in the cooling department.

I worked on a Yacht one time that had twin 3116 motors which I hated to work on or see in anything at my time working at Cat with that damn motor in it. 3126 heui wasn't too bad to work on.

just under 900 like 860 IIRC. but yeah it would be a pulling machine cause it can run all day at 300/900
