HEUI to common rail?

Hi all, so this isn't about the duramax but I don't know where else I should post it, if there's a more appropriate place on here, please move it there.

Now to the point, I'm looking at a Kodiak and it has as cat 3126 with HEUI injection and I was wondering two things. First is how is the 3126 motor a throwaway or with proper maintenance would it outlive me (not literally). Second is, is it possible to convert it to a common rail injection system from an HEUI system? If so, would it even be worth it? Thanks in advance for any information as it is going to be greatly helpful and much appreciated.

Good motors but pigs
Oh I can imagine, especially with having to move something as big as a Kodiak around, only gonna get worse cause my hope is when it's finished it's as big as the Mega Ram Runner, if only I had access to the MRAP axles and t-case though

I used to drive a Pete for Cat with a 3126 Heui (hence my name) had 10K hours and 220K miles and had a low comp hole on #6, it was a 300 hp motor, it had plenty of power to move 26K up most hills at 70 with a 10 speed Eaton and 3.73 gears. you would need some way to program it to change it over and that could be a night mare if it could even be done. if you have the right motor/injectors/turbo you can get a re rate up to 330 hp and 900 ft lbs IIRC. there is some oversized injectors, out there also. like 90 hp one IIRC. I actually liked the motor.

they are a little sluggish but I make a resistor mod that made them fuel up quicker, made it smoke a little more but ran good. also the only motor I have ever seen that had 3 valves per cylinder. One exhaust valve and two intake valves. No shit! kinda cool 18 valve lol.

It's fine. They are not power houses but run decent with not bad reliability. Maintain it properly and it will last. Block is not sleeved so it's considered a "throw away" 3126 is the larger bore to the 3116, not sure what they can be bored if any... The valve cover should have the HP rating and all pertinent info you would need for parts.

Wouldn't be feasible to convert it to a High Pressure Common rail.

Well one thing I will do regardless is I'll add a lift pump for each of the fuel tanks and since I'm going to be putting on a dually long bed from a Silverado 2500 or 3500 on it so I'm going to also put a 100 gallon tank in the bed, not sure how I'd tie it in though,

Damn, that sucks, so what mods would I have to do to get a little more power out of it? Larger turbo, maybe even a second Turbo, larger injectors? What else?

First off look at the build tag on the valve cover, it will tell you the HP rating and what not. Get that info first. Catman probably has more info on mod stuff than me but usually you can get Marine parts and pump them up some.

I work for a Cat dealer but I'm in the large mining division. 3126's are baby's lol

First find out what rating it is and then call a cat dealer and see what it would take to Rerate it. might just be a reflash but also might need hard parts (turbo injectors) I think bully dog makes a tuner too but I don't think it adds much and its expensive. PDI also does some stuff with them too.

K, although it doesn't help with the truck being in Michigan and I'm in Utah, I'll see if I can get the info on it from the seller, don't know where the closest cat dealer in my area is though, will find out on that.

K, I just remembered, I think there's a cat dealer over in Huntington and I'm over outside of Price

So I remember that the Kodiak I'm looking at has a four speed Allison, would it be possible and if so, how hard would it be to convert to a six speed Allison? I'm thinking that I'm gonna be taking it to roughly 500 horsepower and I can get an Allison 1000 over built for 1000 horsepower and I figure that the extra two gears would help with mileage and performance and if the transfer case that the MRAP uses is a divorced one I could put a splitter between the tranny and the transfer case, although the only people in the state that I know of that have transfer cases and axles from the MRAPs is the people at Sparks Motors (the people at Diesel Sellers, they were the ones that built the Mega Ram)

Get a TCM to run correctly would probably be almost impossible without an ECM telling it what to do
K, what about a 4l80 from the people from Jake's Performance with a stand alone controller from PATC? I know from the looks of their stuff, Jake's performance makes some quality stuff and I know I was talking to them before and their level 5 transmission us capable of ~1800 horsepower at the wheels, although from what I've heard O/D is the big problem for trannies in the 4l60/4l80 family and the 4l80s in the Dmax vans were having problems with O/D, and they're only making IIRC ~400 lb/ft of torque so I don't know how well they do that

So I just heard back from the seller and it's a c7 3126, haven't been to a computer yet today and the image of the engine tag isn't wanting to load right now on my phone but as soon as I get it to load I will post the specs listed on it
