Hi guys
I’m currently towing my 5th wheel home and went into limp mode( not sure why ) I cleared the codes and drove to a rest stop. This happen a few years back. I cleared the codes and it’s been fine since. I don’t beat on the truck and the tunes are turned down. I’m gonna stay at rest stop over night in fear of breaking down on these Virginia hills. Truck only has 45k on it. 04 lb7 if my signature doesn’t say. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I’m nervous to continue on!
Thanks for any advice!!!
Mike

Unfortunately I’m on the road without a scanner

01-05 trucks didn't hold much power especially towing heavy did it happen on a 4-5 or 5-4 shift? If you keep it from making those two shifts under much power it might be ok but that's a guess with no codes.

I’m pretty sure I was already in 5th but I can be sure. I know it’s impossible without codes but maybe you can answer me this. If it were to happen again especially pulling a hill would the transmission completely go or would I be stuck in limp? Would I be better manually shifting in like say 3rd and take it slow just to get to safe ground?
I really appreciate your replies!!!

Keeping it from shifting into 5th on the hills will be a good start !

When it happened was it limited to 2k RPM's or was it stuck in 3rd? That will at least help figure out if it's a fuel limp vs trans limp.

Honestly it happened so fast. I would say it was stuck in 3rd. I just remember it tacking up before I pulled over

Thanks guys! Made it home to Jersey. Never limped again but I was very easy on it! Now what to do. Do I keep the truck or is it time for a upgrade and if so what years are the best with little to no modifications for towing 16k up and down hills?
Thanks again for all your fast replies!!!

My 16 hauls 100 times better than my 05 ever did. Pulls my 16k boat like a train. And the ride is so much better on the new trucks. Just my opinion.

If you like to keep things stock, I’d buy a new l5p without thinking twice. The new trucks pull extremely well
