Speaking of, I DO NOT recommend porting your heads. I had SoCal stage 1 ported heads, and had 2 sets fail and hydrolock my motor. By the time you get your heads ported, it is within spitting distance of the Wagler castings, which flow better and don't leak constantly.

Dang it now, I just bought an engine with SC ported heads last week....

I didn't port them on the marine 900's upon advice from those who have ran ported at high power. Bone stock ports, just better springs, keepers, and rail bolts.

Porting is 30% skill and 70% luck that casting your doing is identical to the one you cut on the band saw to gauge runner wall thickness. :)

Statistically, I think you'll be fine. SoCal says they have sold tons of Stage 1, and I'm the first person to have problems. And since SoCal is CNC, not like a hand slips, it was just bum luck. Twice. :dontknow:

Yea I know the cost can creep up there rather quickly. I agree with the comment about wanting a 20k engine for cheaper. That is the truth. Also, for whomever was asking I am in Massachusetts.

You will get many different opinions on motor builds. Everyone has differant luck. I personally think a new crank and af cam is a must. I'm glad I over built mine. Now it's paying off as power levels go up. You can make big power with stock heads. Just do springs and push rods. I'm not sold on wagler heads yet for reliability.

From what i've been told by people that have been in the diesel industry much longer then I have had a diesel, he said the crank is worth the money. I would also assume an AF cam is needed as well.
