I'd plan for the worst if you've been driving it that way for a while. I did a twinned 5.9 Cummins that had a 3/16" groove cut in the head from being run hard with a blown head gasket. And thats an iron head...

James you're dead on, cheap machine shops can cost you a lot in the end. IMO the one place to make sure you go with quality over savings is the machine work!

Machine work

This will make or break the build, make sure it's not the machinist 1st time. Never goes good for the end user.

I did injectors when I was still learning and didn't reseal the cups but I don't think any pulled out with the injectors. The day I put my Exergy sportsman on, on the test drive it pushed coolant out. That was a year ago that's why I think it's a cup but we will see I guess. Local machine shop is what I would call reputable.

If I do need heads is it easy to swap to lly heads? I've heard it's been done but mines an 01 if I'm correct the 01 and 02 trucks are a different animal?

i looked pretty hard into the lly head swap myself and seen that it is extremely hard to do with the 01 and 02. Lb7 heads are very easy to find, get good machine work and make sure the cups are sealed and youll be good to go!!!!

That swap isn't plug and play on the 01/02 trucks like it is on 03 and early 04s. If you don't like wiring or don't want to tackle a lot of it I wouldn't recommend it. My money is on actual head gasket failure. I would bet if it were a cup issue you'd be hydro-locking after a year of driving. That's what my magic diagnostic 8 ball said anyway :D

I guess that would make sense even after sitting for a long time it never hydrolocked. If it's not a cup and is a bad gasket hope my heads are still good if not guess I'll pick up a new set thanks for the info guys. Just ordered my lower pedestal flange from profab, already made a t4 at work but I won't mess with that til the new heads are in place. Can't wait to get her moving again. Now if I could just get Greg at south bend to pick up the phone lol

Ok heads are off. Second injector back on the passenger side had a cup hanging on to it when I pulled it. Think that was the issue. It was low on coolant of course. But as I broke loose the passenger side head bolts I ran into bigger trouble. I broke off the very back two head bolts. Ones got about 2 1/2 inches sticking out the other is maybe sticking out a half inch. Has penetrating oil on it now. I do weld for a living my instincts tell me weld a nut to it. That what we do at work with broken taps and bits. Is there any other tricks there very tight I doubt any easy out would do anything besides break off in there to. Any ideas are welcome. Aside from that the heads pistons and everything check out visually. So I'm lucky there but also very unlucky lol

Bump no ideas other than that? If not I'm gonna weld some nuts to it tomorrow. I don't really want to pull it and have to take it anywhere

Ok beside the head bolts. What's the best way to clean. Cooling system full of soot? Soapy water was a tip I heard any input?

Ok...
I'll try another question. I searched and found how to tell right and left hand gaskets, but Which is driverside and Which is passenger side really don't just want to wing that.

You will likely never get all the soot out of the overflow tank. If you can score a used clean one or a new one is cheap I'd replace it. As far as cleaning the system a little soap goes a long way. I like to do several flushes with diminishing amounts of soap until it's just plain water a couple times. If you're asking which side of the motor is which it's as viewed from the divers seat. I.e. passenger side is right drivers is left.

If you haven't already gotten that broken head bolt you could try the candle wax trick.
Take a torch & heat up the bolt, then take the wax at the same time you're heating it up & put it at the base where the bolt goes in. Heating up the bolt should pull the wax in down to the threads.

Never heard that one. I haven't got it out yet been soaking in Kroil oil. It won't hurt thanks. Has it worked for you?
