I talked to Dan over at PPE and I think I will be going with the GT42 Mag for my build. I was just wondering about other peoples thought on this turbo. Do you feel this it the best turbo for the size or is there something better out there.

Thanks for all the advice ahead of time.

Travis i am aware of the size and im not worried about the tuning. have more then enough time to get it tuned in. just want to know if there is something out there better and would like to know how the people who have it how they like it or if they would have done something else.

Are u going to keep a single cp3 or going with duals. A gt42 will probley lite faster on a dual fuel truck. Make sure not to add so much fuel on the bottom end when tuning it and it will spool quicker. Im keeping a single stock cp3 so i will see how it does. My main concern on why im swicthing to this turbo is to lower drive pressure and i got it brand new for dirt ass cheap

IMO..........you'd be hard-pressed to find a better turbo than the Garrett 'R' series and a modified Magnum is supposed to be some good stuff!
I say.......go for it!

I think for that kind of air and a daily driver, I'd be going for twins. Much better drivability and same amount of air.

Obviously not if you are confined to a single by competition rules or something.

mostly confined by competition rules. but also just dont really want twins. twins are cool to say you have but just not something i feel i need, kinda like the 7.1 kit id love to have it just not something i need.

The 42 mag is a 4202 with Gt45 guts in it. If you are doing it for competition reasons or sled pulling you are gonna have to bush it down anyway the 42 is a 3.0 and the 45 is 3.2. If you are going to drag race I would go for twins.

I bet if you ask Ed, He would tell you if it werent for the 2.8 class in sled pulling he would have twins.

i just dont want twins tho. at least not right now. i am going from a truck that as a 75hp tune on it but mostly just sees an economy tune too a truck that will have a fully built motor and trans with a large charger. i dont even think i will tow with my truck and id like to pull not so much race, so if i have to bush it down then so be it but how much will that limit the air? i am spending alot of money on my truck all at once and i might as well do it right the first time. i know Garrett makes great turbos so why not have one. if at the end of the day i feel it would work better as a twin set up then maybe i will put the stock charger back on and use the 42 as my big (if that would even work). maybe i will go with a supercharger and a turbo. right now im not worried about it. i just want to know if the 42mag is all best route to go.

i would look at some other options of turbos to see what is out there might be a cheeper turbo that will perform to the standards you looking for. i know my 42 i was running would light like a stock turbo and carry close to 70 pounds of boost going down the road.

the thing is i am not really sure whats out there. thats pretty much the entire reason for this thread. like i know there are other turbos but i dont know how they compare. like would it be better to go with an A5K, A6K, S400. i will go with a cheaper turbo as long as it doesnt mean losing performance. i want to be able to push as much air as possible but still be as effictive as possible. power wise i am looking for around 850HPish. track times dont care about, pulling just want to have fun could care less if i win but it is always nice. so if any of this info helps someone tell me the correct turbo to buy or if you need any thing else.

Talk to Forced Inductions http://www.forcedinductions.com/

They are custom building S400 variants for some Duramax's that are supposed to flow as much as a GT42, at half the cost. Also, the S400 can be rebuilt by anyone with turbo knowledge.

Sting says that his S400 "off the shelf" turbo is very drivable and flows close to GT42 numbers.

If I were going with a bigger single setup, it would definitely be an S400 type turbo. Just because of the economics. It is almost as good a turbo, at half the cost and anyone can rebuild it.
