jack ur front tires up and check them bearings.... Neighbor thought it was his rear end also, til we did the above. Thought the darn wheel was going to fall off. OH, and the freakin rear end was completely EMPTY. Cant believe it never got hot enough to lock up....crazy

Ujoints can only be checked with drive shaft off unless they are about to fallout. With the drive shaft off, what you're looking for is tight or notchy movement when you move the ujoint. They shoud be smooth. Generaly they don't make noise except for squeeking when you make a turn.

i had those off about 10k miles ago when i did the carrier bearing and they looked good then. smooth movement like you said. i guess i'll see if i can get it up on blocks sometime shortly and check them as well.

be nice to isolate it to the trans as i know it needs work anyway....
got my fingers crossed.

when you say squeaking when you turn, does that mean both front and rear, or just one of them?? reason i ask is mines 2wd, didn't know if that applied to me or not?? by turning, is it loading up one side of the u joint more than the other??
thx for the help guys...

this is correct. My experiences with this howl on my land rover it was a u-joint. lifting the rear and twisting the shaft it had a little more play than normal, which led me to think rear end maybe u-joint, then once I pulled shaft it was before 1 bolt to go I could tell it was the u-joint.

Correct me if Im wrong wes, It seems to come in when you a cruising then apply some right foot?

that would be it. still whines a little when you back off the throttle, but nowhere near as loud as when its under load....

I had a driver side wheel bearing go out and it didnt have any movement in it. The only way we found it was by jacking the front up and spinning the tire 50mph with a semi wheel spinner thingy ma jigger. I thought it was a u-joint..... i looked for that damn noise for a long time. Replaced it and all was nice and quite again.;)
