i am tackling this now myself, but my frame and components are much much worse to start. I didnt want to put off installing the motor any longer but i didn't want the truck to look half-ass either. I am going to try to get some Ospho to use before i primer and paint so that it kills the thicker rust spots i have. I totally stripped the front end minus the radiator support frame.

Rustolioum or however you spell it, is pretty good stuff, especially for the price:thumb: We usually buy it by the gallon at Home Depot and thin it down with Acetone so it can be sprayed. Works great on equipment....

i thought about using Chassis Saver paint, but i would've been chasing a retailer and I didnt feel like making it more complicated than it needs to be

POR 15 is about the best stuff I have seen as far as chassis paint goes. Its about 5 times the price of Rustolioum and very limited color selection though..

i just read a thread about it over on DP and POR-15 is actually a concrete paint, not a metal paint. someone who worked for them chimed in. A lot of ppl said that it only last maybe 2 years on our frames

Sounds about right, I know we did a front bumper and a couple flat bed bodies with POR-15 and it held up really good but now after 2-3 years there all ready for a re-coat. I have not found a product yet that will hold up on our frames here in the North East for very long, to many elements, mostly all the Dam salt they ues here in N.Y...

How many Varieties does Home Depot or Lowes carry?? I know the kind I buy are for metal applications specifically and can be thinned down with Acetone to be sprayed. At $20 dollers or so a gallon you cant beat the price/quality of the paint IMHO...

I'm going to use their professional primer for rusted metals. Then the black hammered top coat.

edit: after not being able to find the hammered-finish in the can around here, I called Auto Body Supply in Springfield and they have Chassis Saver in stock. Also I couldnt find OsPho within an hour of me so they have a similar product containing zinc phosphate. either way, it should hold up for a while.

I was using POR-15 as far back as 1990, found it in Carlisle, PA at the show.

POR-15 is tough, it doesn't chip easily, flake off easily as long as the prep work is done right, where the problem is is that it lacks UV blockers so top coating POR-15 is important to protect it from UV damage.

If you use black for the frame and compatible flat or semi-gloss paint can be applied, usually an enamel as a topcoat before POR-15 is completely dry.

To know when the right time to apply the topcoat over POR-15 is when you touch the POR-15 and it leaves a fingerprint but no POR-15 transfers to your finger it is ready.

If you topcoat it it will last and look great.

I cant vouch for how POR-15 holds up in bad weather because as most know my truck doesnt see any kind of "weather" at all, I can say that the stuff is nothing short of amazing after it is applied. It does NOT chip easy or flake off at all. Im pretty sure I would be hard pressed to attempt to take it off my frame. I have a few threads over on DP of my frame job I did two years ago if anyone wants to take a look. Like Tony said, its all in the prep work though. It took me a day alone to get the frame how it needed to be before I applied the POR. Also as Tony said, it does need a top coat as it is does not have any UV blockers. I bought POR's topcoat chasis black in a semi gloss and applied it just as as stated when the POR is almost dry. When/if I take this motor out I will be sand blasting the front end and POR-15ing it to match the rear of the frame. I wouldnt hesitate to use it again:cool:

Also check my garage over on DP, I posted a lot of pics of the job and all the prep work if you are thinking about using it

good to know Tony, Thank you. I already ordered the chassis saver at $73 per gallon, which i guess isnt a bad price but it aint rustoleum.

so I am using a putty knife, lighter fluid, and shop towels to strip this thing......i'm really close to just blasting the hell outta the damn thing. I think I have like 8hrs into the hydroformed section of the frame and i might have that much more to go doing it this way.

any tricks or tips guys?

i have already tried the steam cleaning. it takes off the real loose stuff (at 200*) but not everything. this stuff is on there!

Most of mine is coming of with the low temp one and low pressure. We have a high pressure one that also gets very hot for cleaning butcher shops so that might do it.
