The future of the small pickup truck market in the United States doesn't look good. A new global Ford Ranger is in the works, though we have good reason to doubt that will replace the model currently available in North America. For its part, Chrysler has plans to nix the Dodge Dakota next year, and new reports suggest that the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins may have their plugs pulled, as well.

In speaking with General Motors vice chairmain Bob Lutz, PickupTrucks.com asked about plans to kill off the two models, with Lutz responding, "It's uncertain at this point...They may well [go away]."

GM has not announced any official plans to update or kill off the Colorado and Canyon, but we won't be surprised if these two dated models meet that Great Car Crusher in the sky over the next couple of years

Heard today that they are discontinuing production of the Hummer after the line failed to sale to some Chinese company. Bummer. :(

Toyota owns the compact pickup market

It would have been interesting if they would have offered the 3.0 Litre Diesel from the ISUZU DMAX in them

They should have stayed with the S-10 Ford is still sporting the ranger from 1983.

Nobody wants a Inline 5 that is for Volvo's:rofl:

The 4.3 is a great motor not sure why they didn't stick with that

If GM would have made a small pickup that actually got good mileage (the only real reason anyone would buy one in the first place), then they wouldnt have this issue now.

Yet another example of GM screwing itself with its own bad decisions.

GM continues to screw itself by forcing everyone to big diesel or nothing. They're idiots.

Our (the consumers) best interest is not at heart, or otherwise the 4.5liter would already be out and other diesels would be on the way. :thumb:

They have 2.0 diesel Rangers here in Afghanistan for the Afghan Army, very new models and crew cab. I would put money that package would sell like hotcakes in the US.

We run 2.5 liter Rangers in Russia that are built in Europe-Czech Republic if I'm not mistaken. Not bad trucks for light duty and they get 30+ mpg on crappy russian fuel. Ford, Chevy and Dodge should really take more note on what is happening in Europe with the emissions standards and the way the market is going. It's going to affect them sooner than they think!
Even Toyota is yet to release a diesel in the last 20 years in North America although they keep threatening too and yet they have them all over the rest of the world in about 3 or 4 different suv's and trucks?

WTF is with that??

MAybe the trucks here are 2.5............I took someones word for it, I'll check next time.

They have a couple different sizes depending on the year and the model. I believe our Ford Tourneo van is a 2.0 liter but it's also a front wheel drive.

The base model Colorado is $17k and a fully loaded one is $32k.

Exactly how many rich midgets did they think were living in North America? :confused:

They need a low cost minitruck, and the Colorado does not do it. Although the V8 version does sound like fun, it costs almost as much as the full sized truck does.

I had one of the last S-10 ZR2's and it was awesome. The only knock against it was that it was crappy on fuel but what else would you expect from a 4.3L. Lot's of fun to drive and tons of power in a truck that size.

I agree with all above, the first maker to bring a small diesel truck to market will own the small truck market share. Look how popular the VW trucks. I did read somewhere that VW has a truck/suv (avalanche type) in the works and it will be diesel. But, GM was months away from releasing the 4.5L and shat down their leg so who knows.

From the second half of the 5.25-meter-long pickup will be offered later in Europe. As the images reveal, the VW engineers have compared to the 2008 study presented in the Baywatch outfit not changed much. The typical VW face with its horizontal headlamps and the grille slats extending in line was well received, as the lavishly proportioned wheel arches, which are filled according to trim level with 16-inch steel wheels or aluminum-alloy wheels.

Covering an area of 2.52 square meters of the new VW Pickup locker can hold larger items such as transport and transport quads also Euro pallets crosswise.
The width of the Amarok cargo area between wheel arches is located at 1.22 meters, otherwise at 1.62 meters. The truck is Längeder VW with 1.55 meters, the load capacity with 1.15 tons. In addition, the Amarok can take up to 2.8 tons on the hook.

Standard equipment on the three trim levels available including VW Amarok includes adjustable front seats, a floating-folding rear seat, a lockable glovebox, Illumination of load area, ABS, electronic differential locks, and numerous other security features such as height-adjustable head restraints, airbags or seat-belt pretensioners. A switchable via a button off-road ABS will provide shorter stopping distances on gravel and the terrain.

In the higher-quality Trendline and Highline is also a radio with CD player, a multifunction display, standard fog lights or air conditioning on board.ESP is for the VW Amarok only available at extra charge, but comes in conjunction with a Berganfahrassistenten.

Two for the VW turbodiesel Amarok

It's built on a ladder frame construction VW Amarok is offered to the market launch in spring 2010 with a powerful 163 hp two-liter turbodiesel, which develops 1,500 rpm, maximum torque of 400 Nm from. From mid-2010 will add another four-cylinder TDI with 122 hp and a torque of 340 Nm the engine range for the VW pickup. VW Introduces The New livestock either as a 4x2 or 4x4 variant might be possible: depending on the market it is offered with permanent four-wheel drive, selectable four-wheel drive or rear-wheeldrive as pure.

For the VW Amarok with selectable four-wheel drive is the consumption at 7.6 liters per 100 kilometers lie in CO2 emissions at 199 g / km. For the 163 PS TDI Volkswagen's 7.8 liter and a CO2 output of from 206 grams per kilometer. The 80-liter tank will also allow ranges in excess of 1000 kilometers without refueling.

I would really like to get a small truck (diesel would kick ass) that gets decent mileage for my next D/D. I'm still a few years away before my current ecno-box dies but was figuring it would be one of the GM models. Since it's still a few years for me maybe they'll come out with something.

The S10's might have run well with the 4.3 but they were deficient in most other areas. Build quality, body design, and especially crash structure integrity were severely lacking...all areas that the colorados/canyons vastly improved upon.

The problem is that in general americans are just moving away from compact pickup trucks because full size trucks are getting decent fuel economy and are very similarly priced to the current compact pickup trucks. There really isnt any incentive anymore to buy a compact pickup truck..... The colorados/canyons are solid, safe, fun, well built little pickup trucks IMO but their place in the market just doesnt really exist anymore....

I think its a good idea to scrap the smaller pickups for now and come back with a better design with a good diesel engine that gets better mpg.

There have been several rumors that GM might bring the Holden Ute to the states. If they did that could be their replacement for a compact pickup. With the LS3 in it I wouldn't mind having one.
