LB7: Getting Ready For Winter

What do I need to do for this upcoming winter? Right now if it gets below 50 it takes a little longer to start and blows lots of white smoke for about 30 secnods or less. The bad part is that I never knew how the truck ran when it was stock, so I am jumping in all new Territory with lot of stuff done. Now I have my intake heater removed, should I put that back in, should I go with lighter weight oil, shouldinsulate my fass filters, should I get a winter front for my grill, and anything else I need to know.

im guesing you are less the 16:1 cr with the delipped piston correct?
only thing i would do winter cover.. grid heater would help warm up.
maybe tony can bump rail pressure and shorten the pulse width for better finer spray for better burn with the 30 over injectors.

stock dont really get white smoke till 40s

I never ran a intake heater (-22*F). I run syn 5w40 oil. Stay away from bio fuel in the winter. I run a sump and had a lot of issues with it freezing up in the winter when it got to 10 below 0 or colder. A lot of guys with go to a 10 micron filter if it will be below 0. Carry extra filters in the truck to change out if you need to

I also would plug in the block heater and had heaters stuck on the oil pan and the trans pan

Up here in Canada, saw -30* to -40* last winter. I switch to 5w-40 oil, block heater on a timer for 4hrs before I leave for work, white bottle of diesel keen every fill. im going to be using a winter front this year as there were a couple mornings where the truck wasn't blowing the warmest air

intake heater would help reduce the white smoke on start up. i dont think the ecm uses it once above 160* ECT

i ran 15w40 in my 99 all winter last year.. white smoke usually was gone before the ECM brought the rpms back to normal idle.

Use some anti gel fuel additive on every fill up, plug in the engine block heater, when its 30F or below for a few hours before you start it. If you have a winter front cover use it, when its single digit or below.

put new glow plugs in and add some time for the to be on before and after start up and just plug it in at night it wont hurt the block heater to plugged in for 10-12 hours

Where is the best place to get good diesel at? I have been getting from Kum and go because it seem to be the cheapest, but it is bio.

i havent been out to IA in a WHILE.. i'm usually filling up at a loves(hit or mis with bio), TA, pilot, flying J. most of these place run through 10-15,000 gallons of diesel in a 24 hour time frame. i'm little more leary about filling up a 2-3 deisel pump station where it might take them 3-4 day to cycle through their tanks.. my thinking left time the fuel sits less time it has to suck in water....

i have gotten water in fuel at small sations.. i did get one bad tank from a pilot in AL this summer.. to their defense they has very heavy rains for better part of a week..

I like to only use top name brand fuel stations. I dont trust those small brand fuel stations. Most all truck stop fuel has bio. @ least 5% bio.

I gotta wire up a nice outlet for the driveway at the new house for the truck, wonder if they make a permanent timer to wire into the circuit?

pulling mine made no difference in smoke reduction and yes mine was functioning

Wait it stays on until above 160?? If that's the case then mine never turns off because in the winter I never get close to 160. And I'm 170-175 in the summer

it can..
i know on my LB7 it would stay on to 104*ECT and/or 75* IAT then turn off. you can rescale it to stay on longer or shorter.

my LMM i havent found the tables for the intake heater i dont think my LBZ had said tables either.

Yes they do you can get an Intermatic timer and wire it in and set it for what ever time yoh need it to come on.They are a little expensive, you can get cheap 1s that work fine as well,they just plug into the outlet and you plug the extension cord In.

Bump, my mileage seems to be taking a hit, would I be better off running a higher power tune or lower to help with warm up and cold starts
