that i dont doubt im ust wonder what the characteristics of one of these things will be once its gated...

the gate might open at 35psi but drive pressure might be at 60 and who knows it may NEED that 60psi just to create that 35psi of boost.... no one knows really (far as i know) because no one has tried it....

another large dilemma im running into is the springs needed to hold the mofo's closed... really like the tial 38mm but the strongest spring set is only good for 23psi..so i would need to go on a mad spring hunt

I have my own idea's on what to expect , well see i guess, the Synapsis Syncronic waste gates I use come with everything you would need to make it work properly , plus they are diaphragm-less so real reliable

those things are the hot fire:D

i was reading about them in import tuner mag... they are really awesome and innovative but a little on the large/expensive side for what i was wanting to do:eek:

tial makes a "small model" which def isnt as nice but tial is still a very well trusted name and makes quality stuff.. and the size would fit on the lower up-pipes perfectly

why would they need 2 waste gates though? with a single manifold/hotpipe...

They were using 1 wastegate to control the vanes mechanically. (tear off the electronics and manipulate the shaft that controls the vanes). It would start to open the vanes at say...8psi.. (adjustable with a manual boost controller)

another large dilemma im running into is the springs needed to hold the mofo's closed... really like the tial 38mm but the strongest spring set is only good for 23psi..so i would need to go on a mad spring hunt

This can be a pain. My turbonetics 38mm on my car only came with enough spring for 12 psi (largest spring)... I made some shims and got it to around 15psi. Then used a boost controller to get to 26-27. Works fine, but usually you want to be at 80% or so of your target with just the spring, so that could be tough when you are running 35ish PSI

However, with an external gate, you have ports on both sides of the diaphragm. Technically, you can rig boost to both sides of the wastegate, then use a boost controller to bleed the pressure on the top side so it will still open. PITA to get adjusted properly but it will help hold the gate shut until higher pressures without using a huge spring.

The 38MM is around mid 3's (less from ebay but = no support) , comes with flanges , 2 springs , 2 diff size valve seats for fine tuning ( 38mm / 30mm ) . pretty comparable to most $$ wise once you buy the extra stuff to make it work like stiffer springs , ect .

So if I understand this right, you're thinking that their is an optimal vain position say 65%that will make 5 more psi of boost than we are making now. Say 40 psi, and drive pressure will be at an optimal 50 psi. or somewhere in there and your net gain will be 50hp?

I think he's thinking there is an optimal vane position where he can maintain the boost he is making now, but allow the gate to open and significantly drop drive pressure.

I have been testing my Stg3 gated VGT now for about 6 months and yes you can stay really close to 1:1. It works well and gives you alot more tunability as well. The only cautionary advise I can give at this time with all the testing I have done todate you have to be cautious with overspeeding the charger. With mpi twins and my stg3 charger I am 1:1ish(52psi/60psidrive)@3400rpms and then it slowly climbs to 52psi boost to 75-80psi drive at 4500rpms. It works nice, I am still doing alot of testing with it and will continue to find out what it can do. With this setup on my truck I am at 708hp 1272ftlbs on stock sticks with my modded cp3 at 2800us with 52psi and 1400 degrees at the end of the 1/4 @ 11.65@115mph. I am using the Turbonetics 38mm gate with boost on both sides of the diaphram with a controller hooked to the top to adjust it. Hope this answers some questions guys.

appreciate the info mark, you're running a single 38 with good results? im thinking of running 2 just to avoid all the plumbing...after all i dont have another turbo to direct the exhaust too
