From the reports I have gotten as far as plumbing before the filter ( all of the reports were with the 6 speed factory trans cooler ), 120F seems to be the norm. This is good.
Good to know. This is how I was going to plumb it but with a CAT filter no stock filter head.
Ambient most of the year up here is what most would call Damn cold but even at that when towing the fuel temp easily runs at par with coolant temp from what I have seen when I logged it a few years ago. If I can keep it even 50 degrees cooler I would be happy.
FWIW I also believe in not letting the fuel get below 1/3rd. Seen lots of electric fuel pumps in gas jobs die early deaths from low fuel levels over heating the pumps.

I would like to add that the stock cooler location is poor. All the engine and transmission heat funnels right through it so the cooling is not as good as it could be with actual AAT blowing through it.

Perhaps the original design was intended to regulate fuel temp as much as cool it. IE cool it but not to the point of chilling it in the winter? Just a shot in the dark.

A sump is a good idea if using the stock tank. Pulling fuel from as low as possible and away from the return will net lower temps. You will want a cooler with no less tube size then your normal fuel line. Why bottle net it? You also don't want to go so big either that you loose surface area which could be used for cooling. You won't cool it less then ambient temp without running it through ice, another gas, or something else.

I have also been getting low rail pressure codes while towing with less than 1/3 tank of fuel. I have gotten a Derale cooler with a fan that I'm going to install. My question is has anyone found a lower temp thermostat than 180 on/165 off, or has this worked well for everyone who has done this? I have been looking, but haven't really ound anything lower.

You wouldn't want one lower than that, much lower and your engine wouldn't be warm enough.

He's talking about a thermostat switch for the fuel cooler. You don't want your fuel getting up to 180.

I'm building a fuel system. Is there anything specific I should look for in a fuel cooler? Certain flow amount or anything?

I can get a good deal on one of these http://www.jegs.com/i/Derale/259/15950/10002/-1

But I also have some B&M Super coolers laying around...

Going to run remote filter and water separator. Belt driven fuel pump.

Interested in this as well, I have a spare trans cooler with a fan off the gasser that I could toss in the fuel line on the truck. Would it be worth the slight mess and fitting cost?

I finally broke down and bought the Setrab and installed it yesterday.

What are the overall dimensions? I just threw my old transmission cooler that was in the bed of my truck on since I redid my lines. I still need to hook up the fans, I hope it will work better than factory.

Did you plumb yours going to the pump or to the return lines like the factory cooler? I put a Derale cooler with fan on last year in the factory spot, but I am still getting over 200* fuel temps while towing causing me to get a p0087.

You can't blow air through a cooler up against a wall and expect it to work. You must also use a cooler that is zero pressure drop. It needs to flow fast.

What ever that cooler is, it's not efficient enough. I just had 6500 on the back of my truck this weekend in 100* and never saw it go over 150 pulling hills. Placement isn't as much of an issue if the fan can cycle air through the cooler.

The factory location has all the hot air from engine/trans funneling through it instead of AAT air. Even if his Derale is pushing through it there is no good way for the hot air to escape because of poor location.

Location is critical which is why I chose behind the transmission cross member where the air is much cooler and the Setrab is set up as a puller so the hot air gets pulled down and out.

Mine sits right off to the side in the frame rail like mikes setrab should be mounted where all that hot air is and clearly still runs waaaay cooler
