forged pistons?

If your willing to put rings in from time to time the Arias pistons is going to be hard to beat! Cody N put 25k on his build before he took it down to look at it. The pistons hold up fine, it's the rings that wear. The clearance means nothing in a street motor(it expands with heat) and many street cars came with forged pistons from the factory and you just didn't know it. The extreme compresson and soot play a role with a diesel piston so I guess you have to pick what works for you. Jeff

When the rings wear out does it mes the cylinder walls up?

No I have not yet. I will soon but i'm pretty sure there fine looking in with a bore scope. When the rings go they just get a big end gap(on mine it still ran fine). It didn't smoke, use oil or anything out of the norm. When the ring wears flat(there angled) it doesn't seal up as well because of piston rock/movement. You need a sharp edge on the ring with a good hone to keep it sealed up. It will not hurt the block at all. The bore in these blocks are very hard which is why it wears the soft ring. You could go to a stainless steel ring and inprove the ring life by a bunch but they are harder to make seal up. Jeff

Jeff, if you had to guess what kind on increase in longevity (miles) would we see with steel rings

thanks for your input Jeff, I really appreciate it. I was under the impression that when Simon tore his down he had scored the cylinder(s) because the rings wore so much.

Guy at Socal has about 30k miles on his daily driver with Mahle pistons. He has a customer running Mahle pistons that has over 70K miles on a truck towing trailers every day

Forged Mahle's? Or the performance cast Mahle's?

From my understanding the Mahles guy sells are not a true forged piston

the gurus can correct me if i am wrong but the Mahle's are forged, just made out of a different material with higher silica content for better wear characteristics

Where does a Ross piston fall in all this? The shop that will build mine (most likely) used Ross pistons and Howards rods in the DMax

Not sure if they have changed them or not from the old days , but Ross pistons have been out since 07-08 for the dmax , a lot of guys used to run them in the pulling scene , I have yet to find some one that has rn them that i still susing them, and several guys lost sets in the old days wont name any names though , after a lot of searching and studying I passed on the Ross pistons in favor of the Aria's which has a very good track record so far.

Glad you admit it Rob , I didnt want to have to hurt your feelings :hello::rofl:

Thanks Trent, i appreciate it!:D

I would like to go forged, but i guess whats not broke, dont fix it. My luck i would change out my perfectly good pistons, and i would have problems all next year.

Wow Rob, that's pretty good to know! I've been following this thread to see who would say that they're running cut pistons in a high HP truck.

Nick

I am not even a novice when it comes to talking about race builds but it seems Pulling trucks have less issues when compared to Drag racing setups...

How much is a set of Arias cut/coated for a Duramax? I always wanted to see a number for the heck of it. Sure have a reputation for drag race parts fact there after reading of so many builds over the yrs. with his pistons. Arias also has big medicine in engine building too if I remember reading that too.
