First fish out of water

We got our first fish out of water this week at my dealer, Fish out of water= brought to dealer with engine problem and still had program installed under warranty. As it turns out our first is a 6.0 gasser, guess the guy couldnt afford a diesel and needed more power. Well with his cold air kit, cat back, and canned tune he manage to melt the top of his #2 piston off on the exhaust side. GM is not fooling around any more, we are required to take and send back to them digital images of the trucks programming cvn numbers and they come back with a go or no go in a couple hours. This guy instantly lost any and all further powertrain warranty on his '08 cclb 2500 w/28,000 miles. They are even looking hard at larger dia cat back gasser exhaust systems having effects on engine and cat and HO2 warranty issues and possibibly voiding their warranties also.

I know it sounds harsh but if your gonna play you should expect to pay if you get caught, and no tears like this guy did on the phone with the service write either, and no law suits those are the fastest way to look like an a hole p...y if you get caught cheating.

So be careful and smart boys the general is lookin for money and he's taking it out of any one who doesnt do it by their new book of rules, and dont worry their making things terrible for you favorite and not so favorite dealerships also.

To add to what he said we were passed out help numbers for issues with warranty work to help them out aslong as there playing by the book. I just have to have your SR number to help.

Pretty sure my dealer is on to the fact my truck isn't "stock"...

The DA service writer even told my extended warranty company that my truck was lifted so they would deny a claim for front end work...my truck is pretty much stock height.

Do they not have to prove that having aftermarket product X caused Part Y to break or not??

The amount they've paid out for problems because of aftermarket parts is small portion of warranty costs. There are way more people who don't mod their vehicles than mod them in try to still get warranty.

There was a guy that didnt get caught till his 3rd engine replacement, and thats getting expensive.

If GM is going to fight more it must mean the bean counters and lawyers have found some things to help their cause in the court room.

But if what is wrong is something strictly caused by bad OEM parts the warrenty should cover that claim. Thats the way my dealer covers it or at least use to, haven't been in there for a while.

Tom most the time it's just the powertrain part.

Thats how i go about it for the vehicles i see subman, and if its a gray area i give it to the customer as long as they are not a.. holes. There's still a little wiggle room for us here at the dealer level, but its measured in .001 these days.

Have you had any pre 07.5 diesel trucks come in and get caught Robert?
Or is it even required that you guys check cvn's on these years of trucks still under warranty in the event they come in with a powertrain failure?

Just curious because I'm building an engine either way and likely will never use my engine or transmission warranty. But the diffs/TC I may again need to warranty someday and I would hate for my warranty to be voided because I deleted my egr and had to change my tuning to get rid of the codes and now I lost my warranty for a non power-adding change.

Can anyone explain what the CVN is to the others that don't know? I beleive it to be a code for the program being run, but if you load a stock tune back in will they still see the wrong cvn? I tuned a guys LLY(50hp towing) and he really wanted it, but he is gonna be really pissed if the warrenty is void even if the stock tune is back in, when he takes it to the dealer for warrenty for something non tune related.

I thought this was already debated? If you take a dmax into the dealership with engine trouble, they go to the TCM to check input torque history to see if the truck has been tuned. You would have to change both to get away with keeping your warranty. Buy a used truck and save the money if you are worried about having to pay for warranty work, they are not supposed to warranty the crap most of us are getting into. :thumb:

You could probably get away with it on the gassers, they don't have a seperate TCM that I know of.
