I was just wondering if anyone else knows how farm diesel effects you engine. I don't ever run farm diesel because I don't have farm truck tags, but I was helping a buddy haul some hay around recently and he put farm diesel in my truck. Didn't ask, just did it. I've noticed my truck seems to have a louder diesel clatter to the engine now. Runs fine, just sounds different. What do ya'll think?

99% of "Farm Diesel" is red diesel - same exact stuff as on road diesel except they flip a switch when dispensing it that injects a red dye.

Now, if it wasnt offroad or red diesel, thats another story.

It used to have more sulfur in it which helped lube your engine... But now days with all the global warming crap I believe the only difference it the tax free part, and the color.

Ya, like the other guys said, nowadays the only difference is usually just the tax free part. That being said, just because you have farm tags doesn't mean you can fun farm diesel. Red dyed diesel is for off road use only meaning it isn't legal for use on public roads. If you're caught with it in your truck, it can mean big fines. Around here DOT enforcement officers will hang around cattle sale barns and equipment auctions and randomly check trucks for dyed diesel. You might want to tell your buddy to not put red diesel in your truck again.

I've still yet to meet someone who has been caught, or even knows the fine. I've heard anywhere from $1,000/gal to a $10,000 flat fine. They check pretty regularly up here and even set up temporary DOT to check construction semi's fuel tanks.

There is a member here that got busted. From what I understand it wasn't pretty :(

If that's true, that would be the first I know of. I'm with you Kat, neither punishment sounds fun or inexpensive. Especially just to avoid the road tax, doesn't it only save like 58 cents compared to buying from the pump? It would take ALOT of miles to pay the fine with your savings.

That's still illegal to use seeing as your not paying on road
taxes.
so, people that make their own biodiesel are liable to get fined? or people that have run their diesel on staight used trans fluid will get fined since either one doesnt pay on road tax?

That you still have to pay tax on think about it this way if we all ran a home brew and paid no tax the roads would never be worked on.

I am not saying that we all rush to pay tax on the odd stuff we run in our diesels but they can fine us if they feel like it.

Found on a TDI forum

It really depends on the State.

The federal road tax is 24.4 cents per gallon. To pay this, you must file form 637 to register with the IRS, then file form 720 quarterly to pay the tax.

There is probably also a state diesel road tax as well, although Texas (for one) exempts biodiesel, and vegetable oil.

There is no 400 gallon per year/quarter exemption, contrary to some posts.

Also, if you run straight WVO, there is a 50 cent credit available to offset the road tax. If you register as a blender (most people can't), you can get the extra 25.6 cents back from the IRS. If not, you will wipe out your road tax using the credit.

The 50 cent credit is NOT the biodiesel credit, which is only available to those registered biodiesel producers that meet ASTM specs and have full registration. There is no such credit for homebrewers.

Wow, that's crazy. I chewed his ass for putting it in my truck anyway, but ya, I'm fine with buying my diesel from the pump and paying my taxes.:thumb:

works just fine in your truck since there's no difference. But it will totally destroy your wallet if D.O.T. finds it in your tankat a road check.

In Virginia the only people I know who have been busted are the ones with transfer tanks. Do not know the fines or what penalties they paid.
As for me I have debadged my truck and few even know it's a diesel :thumb:

little question. If farm diesel "off road diesel" has red die in it for TAX issue why or how does a DOT officer have the authority to check your tank? Does he have the right to tell you how to file your taxes also? NO off road diesel is tax related which means there has to be a federal IRS agent present in dipping your tank. In the state of KY i know for 100% fact a DOT officer does not have the authority to check your tank without a IRS present. If you are still skeptical you can dump a half a quart of filtered used motor oil in your tank and it will turn from red to BLACK no harm in the engine but can now is listed as a alternate fuel because its your blend. :thumb:
