IF its well tuned, there is little to no smoke, but that can be said about everything. I have seen many ricers and other vehicles including lsx, blowing black from being way to improper tuning. Its the number of people that want a turbo/super car and don't have the money to do it properly. As far as NOx levels, I would be interested to see what a 700HP lsx puts out. As compression/cylinder psi gets raised, as well as cylinder/exhaust temp, the higher the level of NOx goes up.

Seriously?

They wouldn't be able to sell a Z06, Hellcat or GT500 if they put out high levels. Gas and diesel emissions aren't even on the same planet.

I blame it all on the 12v CumminGs crowd.

You can see diesel emissions... Can't with gas... Simple as that.

I bet my turbo LS truck puts out just as much harm as any of my diesels did.

2x

I think I mentioned this once before, but years ago when I had my LB7 (without the cat or egr) I had a buddy in a smog shop test it on the sniffer and it beat the allowable emissions level of the same year (but in gas 6.0L) truck

He was quite surprised. I was not

You know we should sue and get class action status. Pre emissions trucks are getting punished now with making it harder to get those parts. At some point we the people have to stand up to big government.

How about both? Better mpg should equal less fuel burned. Less fuel burned should equal less emissions per mile driven.

It's not likely a linear relationship. I would like to see some serious testing done with this. If the manufacturs weren't burdened with emissions what kind of mpg and performance would we see? Now I'm not talking just straight pipe it and block the EGR, etc. I'm talking the whole drive train. From piston shape to ecm calibration to tcm shift schedules

Reminds me of all the stories you hear about someone developing a carb or technology or engine that gets crazy mpg but it gets bought out by big oil companies and shut down. Environment my ass. Those same big companies are owned by politicians.

I think this is what Ford has done on their new 7.3L gas engine for the HD truck and Medium Duty market. It'll be interesting to see if that pays off. You may see other companies do the same and start ground up with a specific transmission for each engine/job.

I would hate to believe this but it’s interesting how PPEI can get more power and lower emissions.

Guess I’ll just have to go to a muffler shop when I get my 18’...
Or break out the flex pipe :roflmao:

Thats because racecar silly

I know maybe 5 people with gassers that are modified. Hardly any of them see the street very often. I know 20 people with daily driven tuned diesels. Hell we had a random Ecodiesel blow a cloud at us in my cousins lbz just yesterday.

I think we should ban volcanos. No one wants to talk about them and what they spew around the world.

Lol. Mike you know the epa can't find or shut down mother nature. But the chemicals that come out of them and the amount is outrageous!

How much of this is because a hopped up gasser is far less practical of being a daily driver vs a hopped up diesel?

I would argue that there are far more tuned gas vehicles on the road then many of us will ever know. Just visit the ecoboost forums and you will see many threads on it and that is just one example

Good luck finding a shop that will remove a cat or dpf.

I had one near me that I used for years, my guy retired and moved away, the new management won't even utter the words "test pipe". They even went so far as to tell me the car wouldn't run right without the cats intact. (I was born at night, but it wasn't LAST night.)

Cats on my daughters Acadia plugged up, cheapest replacements were like $400 each, 09 Acadia has 3 of them. Muffler shop gave me a $1,600.00 estimate.

Soooooo, needless to say dad worked out a different solution.

Fabbed up what I call a "cat gutter". Serrated piece of tool steel, welded to a 14" lg piece of round stock. Chucked it in a drill motor, removed the "Y" pipe and did some "cat surgery". (Make sure you wear a respirator, boys and girls. Nasty stuff inside one of the cats.)

Installed the spacers in the o2 sensors, thing runs like a champ and sets no MILs.

Yeah, the emission system diagnostics on many gas cars (and especially foreign cars) is a joke. A friend of mine swapped a Honda S2000 motor into a 1960s Sunbeam (emissions exempt in Idaho) and had me do the wiring. Removed cats, removed air pump, blocked EGR. I used a handful of resistors to emulate the air pump and just spliced the output wires of the pre-cat O2 back to the ECU as the post-cat O2 (didn't even install the 2nd O2 sensor!), and it doesn't throw any codes. On the scan tool, the B1S1 and B1S2 voltages are exactly the same with the same transition times and speed, yet it still passes the internal diags ????! Made my life easy, I suppose, as it didn't even need a tune!

Compare that to diesels, which as far back as the LB7 were detecting EGR flow as insufficient if the cats were removed due to the lower back pressure. If modern gas cars get that level of diagnostics, they'll have check engine lights far more often, and start to piss off normal people.

I think there are a lot more tuned gas vehicles than most people realize. I've tuned 2x as many gas motors as I have diesels, including several coworkers. A modified & tuned gas motor can be just as drivable as a modified diesel, if it is tuned right. When they are tuned right, no one notices they are modified, save the occasional black haze at wide open for boosted applications.

The EPA will continue to make life difficult for the performance crowd, but I think they will eventually start stepping on the toes of normal car owners, and I like to think that will create a meaningful backlash that starts to reign them in. I still do what I can to get them under control, but sadly that's not much besides complain to my representatives and hope they don't ignore me.
