the original powershifts were nothing like a modern allison, AJ. Come on, you should know better......
under the speeds and power we are putting through the trans, you need electronic control for a clutch-to-clutch trans. Not to mention, to make the thing SHIFT BY ITSELF BASED ON VEHICLE SPEED, LOAD, AND THROTTLE POSITION. Did the original powershifts do that? Of course not. So no, they havent been "doing this very thing for years"
Have you ever actually worked on a John Deere power shift? I think if you had you would be suprised by how similar they are mechanically. The valve body is where the similarity ends.....
You said, "a clutch-to-clutch automatic needs electronic controls in order to even function at all."
I stand by my answer. I also agree it can't do all the fancy things you mentioned, I never said it would do those things without electronic controls.
John Deere power shifts held up to plenty of power and of course load with no de-fuel, and no unlocked torque converter to absorb any shock for years before electronic controls were used in place of simple mechanical valves.
This wasn't meant as a slam against you Ben. I know you like electronic gadgets and are very good with them. But I simply wanted to point out that "clutch to clutch" shifting has and can be done without electronic controls.
