Drove the chevy Volt today

Back to back with a Prisus, and Chevy got it right that is a nice car! Now if onlythe freaking venders don't screw up on parts manufacturing. They should sell them as fast as they make them. The electronics are top notch everything seems well thought out. The thing rips for an almost 4000 lb car and looks much better in person.

Sorry I didnt take any pics, to much classroom stuff going on! they should be in some dealers as early as this to next week here in california! People will be supprised, I think Fords offerings are the only things close to the volt right now, but not better!

Dang, I just looked it up, and it appears that they do have a mechanical connection to the wheels after all. Just when I was getting excited about it... If I wanted a hybrid, I'd drive a prius.

I guess there is still the Tesla Model S. Not like I could afford a new car before 2012 anyway.

Well you boys are way off! The Generator is in no way connected to the drive wheels THAT are only driven by electricity, and driving the volt and the prius back to back there is no comparison the Volt is a way more refined vehicle! I would have like longer drives in both vehicles but on the exact same course one after the other the volt kills the prius Only time will tell if they got the reliability right. The Prius is closer to gm's first Hybrid truck that just shuts off at stops than a electric vehicle its motor runs damn near all the time. I was fairly disappointed with the 2011 prius we drove it was only slightly less boring than my girl friends Tacoma.

As for MPG it would be easy for the average American driver to not have to put fuel in the volt except once a year, when the car runs itself out of the old fuel automatically so you have to put in a couple fresh gallons for safety. So I guess you cant really say they lied about fuel econ when running the batteries dead and using all the gas in the generator means it gets a minimum of 40mpg to who knows? I know my commuter miles are 8000 a year and if I used it for that alone I would never have to put fuel in it and with an average of $1.50 in elec cost to charge it daily thats a lot of savings over $3.20 a gallon! Definitely not giving up my coal burner but its one cool car technology wise!

testing showed that on a good day it got high 30mpgs....

And you can not make it too far on battery alone....

Also, are you sure the gas engine doesnt propel the wheels? Or am I mis reading what you are saying? Pretty sure the it is propelled by the gas engine as a range extender....

cant you only make it a good 40 or so miles on the batteries????


Although I agree it is pretty cool and I like the thoughts better than the prius, but its nothing what they said it would be. Its an advanced hybrid, nothing like the advertised "plug in car" or "230mpg" claim they marketed.

The batteries are manufactured in S. Korea. I guess because the actual manufacturing process cant be done in this country due to our EPA laws. about 25% of the cars manufacturing cost go's over seas just for the batteries . GOOD going government motors:thumb: How dose it work with the batteries do you own them if you buy the car or do you have to leas them from G.M. or is there a leas option?

From what I've read you can go about 40 miles on the batteries alone without the gas motor ever running, then after that the motor turns a generator that makes electricity to power the wheels and charge the batteries. My understanding was that there wasn't any mechanical connection from the gas motor to the wheels, could be wrong though.

It'd work for me though, it's about 15 miles each way to work for me so I'd be set

Not if the country keeps heading in a positive direction it wont be the future. You either get a goverment that wont give out handouts for people to go buy one, which is ideal. Or Dems get there way and cap and trade passes you wont be able to afford to charge it let alone turn on the lights in your house.

You are correct sir!No mechanical connection at all! One of the mags testing one got 57 miles on battery only before the generator kicked in. So at an advertised 40 miles on battery only thats not a max number.

So how do you measure MPG's if the generator never runs? which is an easy task?
