Drove the chevy Volt today

When I saw the Volt at the LA Auto show last year I thought: I'd love have one so I could put an LS2 in it. :lildevil:

You are correct sir!No mechanical connection at all! One of the mags testing one got 57 miles on battery only before the generator kicked in. So at an advertised 40 miles on battery only thats not a max number.

So how do you measure MPG's if the generator never runs? which is an easy task?

Yeah I hear ya i'd love to see more mini diesels! :thumb:

At any rate gas generators for the Volt are short lived, fuel cells are on the way.

Actually, there IS a mechanical link to the wheels. It uses a planetary gearbox to deliver some of the engine power to the wheels in conjunction with the electric motor (and only above 70 MPH when in range-extend mode).

So, in my mind, it is still a hybrid (barely, but still). Although this is a better solution than most hybrids, IMO.

Yeah Dave there is a trans with an electric motor in it along with some of the usual auto trans parts and that electric motor is what drives the wheels. The generator is connected to that trans by power cables not bolts and a flexplate. The car really sets its own group it a bastard child.....
