Does this block look ok??

Long story short...have an urge to build a short block. Found this lb7 short block local for a good deal but it has some rust in the cylinders from sitting outside. I have no idea how long it sat out there but for the last year its been inside a shop sitting. To me it looks ok like it can easily be bored .020 or so no problem. What do you guys think?? Depending what you guys think and how it looks under the oil pan I will probably pick it up. Comes with block, crank, cam, pistons and rods.

I think it would be okay. Take it to a machine shop and let them dip it and clean it all up. If the rust is bad enough you can bore it .020 like you said.

Seems the general consensus from everyone I have showed the pics too says its salvageable. Now I'm just debating if I want to step into this world.

why was the motor pulled to begin with? i see no one has asked if it spun a bearing or anything in the bottom end. that will trash a block quick

This is the real question. I've bought several blocks with rust like that, most clean up with just a hone. The rust wouldn't scare me off.

I asked him why it was pulled and it if had any bent rods or anything. He said he has no idea why it was pulled and that he originally bought it from a shop that bought the entire truck for a parts truck. Said he bought the motor to snag some parts off of and that he had snagged all he wanted so far.

I would have to give it a good once over if i go out to look at it.

flip the block over and look for any spun bearings and if you can, yank the cam out and look there as well.

if all that checks out, id use the block. the other parts, well that all depends on how they look after its torn down

Spin that mofo. And do what James said, flip we over, pull the pan off and take a peak.
