Go drive the truck, get the trans hot. stop leave the truck running. go outside and feel the trans lines going to the cooler. if the line going in is hot and the line going back to the trans is cold. The cooler needs to be cleaned out internally.

My ATS trans always ran hot and I always thought it had something wrong with it,my current trans runs very cool like 160 till im pulling a trailer or floging it at the track and then it hangs at 200.Pretty sure that's just the way they are.Mine was a stage 4 btw

I had one and it ran hot. And they were of little help about the situation. I ended up fixing it by buying a trans from Mike L and junking that piece of shit.

like the above said, ours ran hot as well. We went through 2 converters and one trans in the puller with wonderful ATS products.

Put a stock one built by BD last time and its been perfect

Been there myself as well. I tried the DIY stage 2 kit from ATS and later found out the clutches were the "orange ones" that are the junk ones. Then on the second kit 2nd 5 star converter I ordered what I thought were the so called "green clutches" only to get orange ones again that they would not trade me for wanted more money so I just used them and then again third converter and different clutches from different source lasted about 2 years finally the DTS ally has been the ticket:woott:. All of my ATS stuff was out of pocket no warrenty:mad: So I fill your pain and my ATS trans usually ran 220 on a cool day and 250+ any other time

Pull the lower line from the heat exchanger [in radiator] and check for debris in the screen-! Clutch material can clog there, and cause high temp.

You can also pull the top cooler line where it goes into the trans-- add a piece of hose to the line- start the truck and check for flow. [only run for a few seconds] That will show if you have flow through the cooler/s.

You can also do as I did since I pulled my trans so many times I found a really good product called kooler clean by Dr Tranny carquest and napa are the only two I know that sell it. Just unhook both your cooler lines from the bellhousing get a drain pan cut the nipple of the hose on the can use a spare piece of 1/2 or 3/4 fuel or rubber hose connect to "from cooler line" then feed the kooler clean tube into the "to cooler line" and disperse the whole can after words use air nozzle to blow the rest of the cleaner out it is not going to hurt a thing if a little is left in the lines and let it air dry for 30 or so minutes. then reconnect everything take a test drive and check fluid level add if needed. This stuff works:thumb: My DTS trans runs 175 all day even with 90+ high humid days here in south GA it may break 180 if its really humid and my spin filter needs changing (change every 5k) but it rarely does I haven't towed with it yet but hope to soon. Hope this helps. Best bet is after warrenty expires find a good allison shop and let them have at it then your high heat days will be behind you.:thumb:

If you want your ATS trans to run cooler. Ditch the converter, and pressure regulator valve and spring. Their clutches are not any better than the above parts mentioned. The co-pilot likes to twist C2 hub splines and P2 planets splines. The ugly purple color is baked on and is permanent. I will not accept their trans as a core. I will convert it and make it right, but you will live with the purple. Converter companies don't even want their converter as a core.

Take it to Mike and get him to make it right. You'll never have a problem again! My Mike L. trans/cooler combo never saw over 200 on a 100deg day pulling a 31' travel trailer fully loaded with gear and pulling 6% grades for several miles at a time with the twins! I love that trans!

My stage 2 kit has always ran hot as well. With a bigger cooler it is about 100* over outside air temps in 5th. Tested it out a few years ago. Pulling a 5k trailer around Indy, about 80* outside. Trans temps in 5th tow haul on were about 180*. Dropped to 4th and temps climbed to 240* within 10-15 minutes. Nothing else changed. Shifted up to 5th and within about 20 minutes they fell back to 180 ish. Next one won't be purple.

Since this thread started I have been paying particular attention to my trans temps, and 185+/- 5* is where mine stays unless I beat on it several times in a row, running to 100mph+

When I'm toyin around I run in 5th sometimes even 4th at 55-60mph to keep the turbo loaded and still my temps don't climb like that, they might see 205* but typically 200 is tops

Why is ATS so popular?

People like purple:rofl:

Back when diesels became popular they were pretty much the only big game in town and they can market a product that's for sure. They aren't really bad persay just not as good as some others I guess.Mine lasted for 4 years of abuse but the second my twins were on it gave up the farm in a hurry............like the same day they were installed lol.

I'm sure back in the day they were not all that bad, considering power levels were not reaching the catastrophic heights they are today

The ATS trans gave out the SAME day you installed your twins...
Wow, that's kinda funny and kinda sad at the same time:rolleyes:

No doubt ATS can market a product, purple is a "royal" color as well, marketing again, hide all your flaws behind fancy ads, wow, I'm suprised I managed to stay out of the ATS trap:D I'm usually the gullible gimmick guy:rofl:

I will say I was really close to buyin in though, the way they market their product being made in the U.S.A, the fact they offer just about damn near everything and custom clutch and frictions with the square teeth, blah blah blah. Man, my truck was this close to being a (non) rolling ATS add

:roflmao:
