For the ones who are curious.
I changed my fuel filter at approx. 10000km and this is the results.

And this is my buddy's (Duramaxdiesel) fuel filter at approx. 74000km

Both are the same filters (racor).

That really doesn't say much. Pulling the media apart gives much better story but since you used something like a sawzall or grinder to cut it open, your going to find a bunch of crap in both filters now.

You can still pull the pleats open and look at the areas not near the cut.

I know you see the sawzall there in the pic but I cut it by hand with a metal hack saw as I didn't have anything to hold the filter with. I know it's not a good way to cut it open, just a quick view. But you do see a big diff between both filters

Yup. The color isn't what you should be looking for. It's the trash inside you should be looking at.

Cut the filter (metal housing) at the top right at below the crimp. Then pull it apart then you can get a better look at the filter.

What would be the best way to cleanly cut open a fuel filter?

Some type of large pipe cutter?

If you bury utility for a living and have bigass pipe cutters like me...yes. But the one in that link makes a clean line right by the crimp so you can pull the whole membrane out and inspect it.

Sawzal works just fine right by the crimp. Just remember you can start a fire.
