Bu, running a block heater on batteries and an inverter is pointless in my own opinion...its not feasible in the slightest unless you have like 10 marine batteries hooked up in parallel.

I left my tech 2 plugged in and on overnight and my truck wouldnt even start the next morning. Thats a TECH 2. How much do you think that draws compared to a 110v block heater?

Are you sure you dont have other problems with the engine...my built motor never smoked like that at those temps.

i have ~15,000 on the motor

with the feasco around getting my block done back in NOV.. when i get a chance i want to go through the block and measure everything again.

i have left lights on my truck for a weekend it start back up.

i am not looking at running the block heater over night. just a 30-45 minutes
and what Jneal said... the suck batterys down fast!

My truck would smoke like that, but I was at about 15:1 compression ratio. I was able to tune most of the smoke out by playing with fuel pressure and idle speed. Might try playing with the tuning some.

it would not suprise me im low 16s.
im .006" out of the hole wiht a LBZ bowl (what guys says)on a .040 piston...plus shaved to wiegh the same as .020" with same bowl.

iirc stock is .012 out the hole. -2.56cc
.040 is 840.6 cc per hole..
C grade about ~.041" thick is 8.6cc
.006" out is -1.29cc
that leaves 7.31cc at TDC between head and piston crown +/- head volume round vlv seats and inj tip.
plus what ever the actuall bowl is. i have know idea.
that 847.91cc

wow what batteries are you running? Keep the headlights on for 48 hours and still start the truck??

Running the block heater just for 30 minutes isnt going to do anything IMO. Ive had to plug mine in for 2+ hours for it to get the coolant up to an acceptable temp.

Me and foster (mainer) go to school where it gets -20* in the winter. We know what cold is, and so do our trucks. My truck has probably been plugged in 3 times since new, and Ive never had any problems due to cold weather. When I tore down both motors the bearings and everything looked perfect...zero internal signs of "cold start abuse".

All im saying is the whole inverter, isolator, etc....... setup is so mickey mouse and rube-goldberg when all you need is a cheap little 2000w generator, as everyone suggested. Simple solution to a simple problem.

What about using a 12 volt heating element with lower wattage with the programmable control timer. Try Tempco, Big Chief, and Allied for heating elements. I'm not even sure anything is available with those specs or if it would actually raise the coolant temperature enough to be usefull.

now hold on, think about that for a minute........why does that not make any sense....

if what you say is true, you've just solved the world energy crisis...

I dont blame you there, and also swap those pistons around while your in there.

Mine smokes at idle and after trip down th eroad cleans up, Think its from the lower comp and the injectors and crappy tune I have.

your crazy.... learn to deal with a cold truck or walk if its only 2 minutes, that should keep you warm and in shape

I'm gonna have to agree with this guy.
Or go with the Espar or a Webasto. At .7 liters per hour, you can't get much more efficient fuel consumption than that. It will heat up to about 130 to 150F in about 20-30min.

Were there is one in wrong there is another and #2 is 1 of them ;),Has nothing to do with the middle pistons or the flash glare. If your going to be going into it again it would be wise to take the time to fix it this time since you will be needing head gaskets again when you do what you have planed.

wait...Adam you have a piston in there the wrong way?????

tommy and henery think i have 2-4 pistons on the wrong side of the bank. due to the .030" offset of the wrist pin

maybe i should name the truck re-work....
guy had to re-work the block and pistons
i might have to re-work the motor assembly... head bolts need re-done. vlv lash need check

.... had a 3 week time frame setup to build this motor... it got cut to less then 48 hours by stuff out side my control  and cost me enough to build ~2 short blocks :(

henery: i probly will be pulling the pistons out... checking piston to bore rings, clearnce dish volumes.

naaa im only 99.99% positive you have at least one in backwards ;) I would go with the remoste strt adam 20 mins of warm up and you will be good to go. they also have gps units with remote start tht you can ise your cell phone to start the truck monitor ect ect

Adam don't get me wrong but you have number 2 in the wrong hole so there is atleast 2 when you have 1 in the wrong hole. And Guy even said that the piston is not machined wrong.

It can happen easy,These are the ones that the machine shop put in a friends motor that we had to end up rebuilding and the block was also replaced,Motor was alittle tight to turn over.
Look at #4 and 8 and 2nd pic look at #3 and #7
