OK the finalized prototype is DONE and ready for production!
Ive made quite a few cosmetic improvements, completely cleaned it up, and integrated the plug/wiring much better than on the "proof of concept" prototype. If you look at it from the bottom, you do not see the wire running to the plug underneath (no channel for the wire), it is all molded into the base mount.
Shown is the "hardwire" version. There will also be the "plug and play" version which simply has an OBD J1962 connector on the other end instead of bare wires.
I highly recommend the hardwire version. Its much cleaner, theres no potential to knock the plug out with your knee, and best of all/most importantly, you can leave the hardwire version in the truck when you take it to the dealer (the wiring is hidden up in the harness, they would never see it), whereas if you take the plug and play version, the dealer would see the plug in the OBD port, or the plug dangling there. The hardwire version will be cheaper as well.
Installation is very easy; if you can wire a light switch or hook up a stereo this will be no problem. Simply just splice the wires (LB7/LLY guys only have 4 wires to hook up, LBZ/LMM guys have 8 wires to hook up) into the wiring that goes into the back of the OBD port. For the mount itself, all you have to do is remove the dash bezel, and bolt in the metal bracket for the mount, then snap it all back into place. It uses one of the existing screws in the dash; no drilling or extra parts needed. Of course complete printed instructions with wiring diagrams are included...
I have a couple made so far, but I want to get like 5 or 6 made before I start taking orders, which should hopefully be this weekend.
Anyway, here are the pictures of the "final" production model. Dont mind the scratches, the flash on the camera made it look a little odd.
