Anyone here running these? From what Ive read on the board most seem to not know of any aftermarket companies making dmax cranks, except for Guy's 7.1 crank.

Is this a viable option.... and anyone have some sort of idea on price?

Crower Crankshafts are made from the finest quality materials in the world. Our top of the line forged cranks are made from aerospace quality, vacuum degassed 4340 chromoly steel. Our 4340 forged cranks are "non-twist" drop forged for the strongest crankshafts on the market. Crower's billet cranks utilize either 4340 or EN30B materials. It's your choice at Cower, we make what you want and need for your application.

Crower makes one of the top cranks before you get into the HIGH HIGH dollar crankshafts. I've never ran the D-max version, but I've got three SBC cranks in the garage. I've never had an issue with quality or performance.

Out of the budget this go round!

Thanks for calling RPM.

I belive thts one of the reasons guy wanted to do the stroker. becuase it would be the same price for the stock size crank or stroker and for the money more people would want the stroker. stroker kit doesnt add much over a normal build about 3k irc

You will not break a crank due to the availible HP we have now. The same crank we have from the factory is a bit bigger than what the blower alcohol Pro mod guys use....3500-4000HP!! and about 2000-2500lbs of TQ...and a ton more RPM.

the cranks that have broken are due to the external ballence design, the weight on the snout, and bad harmonics associated with extra HP and RPM( bad injectors/ ballence)

The design of the stocker is great, and so is guy's billit crank, but BOTH have broke due to the same reason. While only a few have ever failed to my knowledge, this shows us that there is a greater problem, and it is being currently worked on.

I believe Watson and Flax are gonna be running these crower billet cranks as closely to internally balanced as they could get em in their mod class pulling trucks...

2nd or 3rd hand information is always 100% accurate;)

Correct, Guy did tell me that a failure had happened at the snout of the crank, due to what he believes to be caused from a bad tune/ injector ballence.

I personally think that it would have been OK had it been internally ballenced, but that's exspensive, and not very practicle for street use, only full out racing!!

who did the failure analysys? If the snout breaks off a bad tune or injectors caused it? I would think along the lines of a bad balancer, a bad forging, ect.

X2

There have been lots of injector issues (LB7) that have caused all sorts of problems, but there have been very few crank failures. I realize the 7.1 was probably not used in a "stock" setting so that may have contributed to the failure. The one crank that I saw pictures of (stock crank), did not break at the snout (if memory serves me correctly). It was in the "Performance" section on DP about a year or two ago.

I'm not doubting Guy as he has probably forgotten more about performance motors (or even engines in general) than I will ever know, but I have been around them long enough to see lots of different failures and there causes. I have not scrutinized a Dmax crank to see where the weakest points are, maybe somebody could help me out there....

Is the snout the weekest part of the crank? Ben's motor stopped dead (even caused the two piece flexplate to twist) and the balancer and snout stayed intact (I can't imagine much more trauma than that).

I know harmonics can play a huge role in engine damage, but usually the bearings will take the biggest hit.....

Again just trying to increase my knowledge base as I have lots to learn, and most of my experience has been with gas and alcohol motors, so diesel is a new animal to me.

Im not exactly sure, but im confident that it may have been a combination of problems that led to the crank failure. Guy would be best to answer the questions about his crank, or broken cranks in general.
