Couple of ideas?

Emergency stop switch - This is a really big button that when you hit it, it stays locked until you twist it. You can easily hit one with a gloved hand while moving. Not cheap though, expect to pay $30-$60 for a big one. Better than a hand switch.

Horn relay - Hold the horn down when you want to be unlocked; one thumb operation, works even while steering. Add toggle switch to disconnect actual horns will perhaps stop sled guy from killing you for scaring the crap out of him at the end of the pull.

In any case, I'd like to buy one when they become available.

i was thinking something along the lines that monitored my brain, and when I think to myself to un-lock, it senses it and does just that.

So...what do you think? Haha, J/K Ben, Although, I wont put it past you to figure it out...

I think a toggle would be good enough.

hmmmmm...what about VSS and TPS monitor...:D

I think all the concern is about when it gets real bumpy. A toggle switch will work fine 90% of the time.

GPS-based unit... when ground speed is less than 5 mph, unlock. :D

Get OnStar in on this...

"This is OnStar, may I be of service?"
"Yeah, I'm hookin' up to da sled right bout now. Can ya kills da converter lock when I slows down to 5mph?"
"Your OnStar request is being processed. ... Sir, the instructions have been programmed into your truck."
"Thank ya kindly!"

VROOOOMMMM!!!!

"Uh, Bubba? This is OnStar. 152 feet??? ARE YOU FOOKIN' KIDDING ME!!! TURN IN YOUR TRUCK, YOU DO NOT DESERVE IT!!!"

OnStar puts your truck into Valet mode and instructions come up on how to get to the nearest GM dealer...

ok so its "normally locked" but then you press/hold the momentary button it unlocks?

how does everyone feel about that? I suppose I could have you guys specify whether you wanted a toggle or momentary push button...

Im still working on the shifter switch mount.

thoughts?

I don't want to "hold" a button. Maybe not a toggle but when you push it, it clicks & unlocks maybe with a light when the switch is in the unlock position so you could click the switch for normal function next time?

Make a version with six foot long wires and no switch for those who want a special switch. I'll rig ours up to either the horn or an emergency stop button no matter what switch it comes with.

Toggle makes more sense the majority of possible applications. A toggle can do the job of a momentary, but not vice-versa.

Momentary doesn't sound like a very good idea while on the ride of your life either going down the drag track or down the sled track. The last thing someone would want to do is hold a button down while trying to do other functions at the same time. Flip switch for me, lighted would be cool.

I think I would want something attached to the steering wheel (obviously something that is also detachable), so I could keep my hands on the wheel and have it easily in reach. Maybe even what Pat is suggesting with the horn button would be good, but I wouldn't want to hold it. Perhaps you could find a latching relay that would work.

On bucket seat trucks, a switch will mount in place of the cigarette lighter. It is easy to reach. A lighted switch has no advantage, you only have time to feel it , not look at it.

Ben.... as far as a steering wheel housing....

MOTORCYCLE_Velcr_4a56524d3b9b0.jpg

I can supply the housing, switch (have momentary and latching), switch cover and velcro strap to attach to a steering wheel/grab bar/wherever. Could also get them with cable lead soldered to the switch coming off to bare wires, or more than likely just the switch assembly and housing and you go from there.

Let me know if something like that might interest you. You could make it plug in/removable if guys wanted it just for pulling - could plug it in and velcro it on and go!

I like the project!
