If you where to put a cat in a vehicle what would it be? I am thinking of going with a 3116 Cat mated to a allison 545 tranny out of a school bus. Is there anyone out there that can build these tranny's to handle serious abuse? or are they pretty good the way they are. The truck its going in is Goodtime Its a 2500 chevy. Do i have to worry about any frame problems. I have three 1/2 Plates running from side to side now because of my shackles. I will be putting 5 tons under the truck very soon so if i got to i can make more support. I want the truck to be somewhere in the 500 - 600 hp range making around 1,500 pound feet of torque or more.

The AT545 is a 4 speed made for medium-duty use, 4000rpm max, 235HP, 445ftlb.

You'd be better off with an Allison 1000.

Pat How could i get a allison 1,000 To work with the motor as far as knowing when to shift and all. Another them im worryed about is if the Tcm gets wet. I was trying to go all mechanical so i didnt have to worry about water damage.

You can get standalone controllers from allison.

How come your going with a 3116, get it cheap? I figure there are plenty of better motors to go with than that one. Another thing I'm thinking is that it's going to be mega nose heavy with a Cat up front.

I figured it would be a nose heavy pig but that will help me when it comes to pulling the sled. I think the 63 inch rise and canes like a little weight for them to dig threw and find the hard ground.

My recommendation was going to be a 3406b, because you can get those with a rating closer to what he's looking for. might be able to turn it up a bit to where you want too. Only thing is that they are a tad bigger and heavier than the 3116.

Keep it simple big block chevy:thumb:

I would go with the big block chevy but its gonna cost more money for repairs. As hard as i am on motors and trucks in general i will more then likely be blowing it up all the time. A big block is also close to the weight as a cummins motor. This truck will be a tug truck mud truck and sled pulling truck. Running the open class against the 1500 hp gasser motors. Im trying to do my homework and get all my power to the ground so i can win some events:D

Maybe a modified 8.3 cummins or a DT 466 would be a better easier fab job and can easily be made to make those numbers!

Cheap and Cat motors do not belong in the same sentence. Good luck getting a 3116 to turn 600hp.

You will be miles ahead with a 5.9 cummins or a 8.3 cummins. Like Caleb said you can also go with a Dt466 as there are tons of aftermarket stuff available for those motors.

DT466 would be awesome and can be had cheap in stock form but what would it take in $ for turbo and pump to make that kind of power?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Especially when compared to a BBC!

IDK, High power gassers are very expensive. 8.3l cummins will be the most cost effective route, assuming that the 5.9l is out of the question.

I agree with the others. I work for Cat and going with a 3116 and making 600hp and not having it break all the time is out of the question. If it was me I'd find a mechanical DT466 or mechanical cummins C8.3. Those engines can make that kinda HP and somewhat be reliable. My first choice would be a DT466 though.
