Sorry to hear about the pistons

wonder if injecting before 2nd turbo might help water absorb more inlet air heat. i thought previous pistons showed signs of metal leaving piston tops from maybe water particles coming into contact. maybe some kind of thermal reaction.

I don't know much about water injection systems in diesels, but I would be REALLY worried about injecting water before the second turbo. There is a thing called turbine impingement. If any water droplets hit the compressor wheel, the wheel would start to wash out and be ruined. Even steam hitting the wheel in the wrong circumstances may cause problems.

I have seen the results of a GE Frame 5 turbine that had some issues with liquid coming in the intake. It was not pretty.

blkmax, tractor pullers have been spraying interstage for years. the turbine impingement is what i think is happening in the pictures to the previous engines pistons and i am curious if this is what is happening. casper has a larger frontal area compared to the other vehicles running, which will put more load on engine.

LSR... We are trying for the Sept. 13th El Mirage event.

With the hamsters soccer and softball schedule I won't be able to drag race until after the first of the year. Since there is no local 1/4 mile tracks

I agree with this, I had water droplets hit my impeller on an A2000 I was running on my old 2002 GMC before I put twins on it and the leading edges looked almost like a mess up saw blades.

We have not had any impeller issues spraying water pre-turbo yet, and have been doing it for over 1 year. So for racing apps, I don't think it will be an issue.

There's a pretty good article about water injection in the latest issue of Maxxtorque. It does address turbo impingement. Seems to me a little impeller damage is significantly less expensive and dramatic than melted pistons.

Anyone know what the difference is in size of a Cummins piston vs. the Dmax piston???? I know that Cummins offers a monotherm for the 5.9's and maybe even the 6.7 ... How much do you have to bore a Duramax block to get one to fit?

Does anyone foresee this happening to forged pistons at similar power levels in a less demanding situation (i.e. drag racing or pulling where the power is only used for a few seconds at a time)? I'm thinking that part of the problem was the length of time under full power on a LSR run.

No one that i know of has killed a forged piston ............................. except for Pat , Its a totaly different game to hold power for up to 60 sec straight than for 10-12 secounds IMOP .
