IMO a transtar/OEM LML is a good bang for the buck assuming that's all that's wrong with it. I think you'd be doing yourself one heck of a disservice if you didn't open it up and check things out while it's apart to find the root cause. It would suck to buy a $700 converter to just kill it again in short order because you didn't want to spend ~$50 in gaskets for some investigation.
If the LML converter is really better than a lbz converter then it's going to be hard to beat for $480. I may just order that and a gasket kit. Never looked inside a trans before but maybe I can get on youtube and learn a little. Not paying someone $150 per hour to do it, id rather roll the dice than that. I feel like the odds would be in my favor anyways, the trans shifts absolutely perfect. Just no converter lock.

It is difficult to mess up taking the bell housing/front drum/c3 out of them IMO. There are enough youtube videos that make that job easy (Truck Master has a pretty decent one).


To clarify, wasn't saying it to be a dick, I just don't want to see you waste money/time.

It is difficult to mess up taking the bell housing/front drum/c3 out of them IMO. There are enough youtube videos that make that job easy (Truck Master has a pretty decent one).

I understand, I'd rather not have to do it but I am going to have the trans out anyways swapping converters so may as well learn a little more while I'm at it.

just make sure you seat the converter all the way in. there can be a false seating or it doesn't go in all the way but feels like it. you will know when you go to bolt the trans back in if the converter contacts the flex plate before the bell housing. other then that it's pretty straight forward. and heavy...

A hot flush is accomplished by a machine that circulates hot cleaning thru your trans lines and cooler (or engine or ??) such that you get a very effective cleaning of the flushed devices. Mike L said always do hot flush when you need to clean lines, cooler, etc., not the spray can type.

The HOOT method has several names and I never figured out where that name came from. but it's just a method of doing as complete a fluid change out as one can get at home.

The "Hoot" method was named after "Hoot", a member at the Place, who posted the first DIY about it in 2003-ish. The name stuck.

He was a Dodge guy who was one of the first mods at the Place, and later his truck was wrecked by a fallen tree in his driveway. The rest, as they say, is history.

The guy that had the truck before me took pics when he checked things out and changed fluid/filters. This was the solenoid screen he said.

And the pan had a couple small pieces in it and typical dust on the magnet. He said he ran about 8 gallons of fluid through it after he lost the converter.

I’d just run reg dex6. With that much trash in there, it’s hard to say how much the pump was starved of oil and how long the trans will last. Putting an oil like you want in there won’t do anything but lighten your wallet, sadly.

You will probably need to do a drain/refill a few times even after the hot flush through the coolers.

So I found where Mike L was talking about running the LML converter in a 01-10 truck. Can someone explain? I thought the LML converter was an upgrade over the stock lbz/lmm converter..

So I found where Mike L was talking about running the LML converter in a 01-10 truck. Can someone explain? I thought the LML converter was an upgrade over the stock lbz/lmm converter..

Tell me how long an 01-10 converter lasts with 800ft-lb going through it, nowhere near as long as an 11-16 I'll tell you that.

I understand the converter is better, but Mike said if the pressure is too high for the LML converter it will hurt the clutch lining. 01-10 runs 230psi and 11-16 runs 80psi is what he said. My concern is will the higher pressure kill the LML converter faster, should I just put a stock converter back in it? This is confusing me

you will be fine. some guys wanted to mod line pressure on a trans while the converter is out and mike is warning them that too high will kill the lock up clutch. The same can happen to the trans clutches. The LML runs a pressure of 80psi under cruise conditions and then will spike pressure to 250ish when a clutch is applied. Then settle back down to 80ish psi. the L5P's do this as well. its to save on trans temp and fuel mileage. You only need the high pressure when the clutch is applied, then drop it enough to hold the power the truck makes.

So putting the converter in wont be an issue, just dont go modding the line pressure to be super high. the converter wont care if it runs at 230-250psi all the time or spikes like described.
